No Timing Marks

Recommended Posts

Picked up two na cams today and just realized they have no timing marks on them. I know that the dist and cam sensor ends are parallel when lined up correctly, but how will I know I'm not 180 degrees off? And with the engine in the car, it's impossible to get a good angle to make sure they are exactly parallel.

Any tricks?

Also does anyone have any definitive info regarding 93 cams being better than 94+?

Might just head back to the junkyard this weekend and get cams from the 93 I saw and hope it has timing marks. Don't want to spend another 40 bucks though.

O I understand that now. So the 180 thing is easy. My only problem is...with the engine being in the car, I'm looking at those slots at an angle. I can't look at it dead on as if my engine was on a stand. Out of curiosity I recently set my current cams with the timing cover marks, removed my dist and cam sensor, and even though I knew they were parallel I couldn't be sure just from looking at it. Plus the engine sits at an angle which doesn't help.

Make sure the cam gears are in the middle of their slots as well so when you adjust timing you have a full 7 degrees in each direction.

As long as the rear is lined up the cam gear position does not matter.

Yea these look like they have never been adjusted. Can't see any gaps under the 3 bolts like my turbo ones that I've already adjusted. All Volvo cams are adjustable right? I'm just more worried about getting the shaft itself straight

Factory tool....

In use....

Could definitely make one of these. Would be cool if I could rent one for cheap though.

Also just found out that the cams rcstdad dyno-ed with are 94, so hoping for 11 hp lol. Still wondering how much better the 93's are though. Probably not worth another 40 bucks.

You really don't need to use the tool. Just line up the slots with the grooves where the cover seals to the head parallel and you'll be fine. All gears are adjustable.

Also if you're replacing the cam seals you need to take off the gears.

Also I got the 93 cams as I heard they were better as well. My reasoning is that if the intake manifold was different in the 93 there is a good shot the cams are different too and in a good way.

The intake is above the line and the exhaust is below if you note the pictures. You do NOT need the tool as the cams will set the timing.

- Make sure the crank is on the timing mark!!!

- Put the cams in and align them with the head like pictured (does not have to be perfect)

- Bolt the cover down

- Install seals

- Put the intake and exhaust cams on, aligning the timing marks in the general direction

- Make sure the bolts are in the center of the slots on the cam gears

- Put the timing belt cover on and move the cams to the correct marks

thats one thing i would never attempt to do with a interference engine. even renting the tool for x amount of money is cheaper then a vlave job if u dont do something right. i do these weekely and i still use the right tool everytime,
