No Timing Marks

Recommended Posts

thats one thing i would never attempt to do with a interference engine. even renting the tool for x amount of money is cheaper then a vlave job if u dont do something right. i do these weekely and i still use the right tool everytime,

+1, and the correct tool makes the job so much easier, piece of mind alone that you've removed the guess work.

Well my problem is I don't have marks. So I have to get the slots perfectly parallel and I won't be able to check it on the gear side like most of you. I think I'll be fine making my own tool though.

You will be able to eye ball the middle of the slots.

Anyway you need to read the Haynes manual procedure as in there you basically set the gears in the middle of their by Only hand tightening 2/3 bolts on each slot an then run the belt and the you need to push down hard and twice on the top of the belt and the left side.

Go read the Tracey soap hea gasket replacement guide and in page 9 there is re placing the cam gears and it explains putting the gears in the middle of the slots.

Then you can mark your own marks so u can use a cam adjustment tool.

It is safer to do the cam & tbelt setup with the cams locked - far less chance for error - as he pointed out, it's not entirely obvious that the exhaust cam is properly aligned since you can't get a straight view of the slot relative to the head surface. Not difficult to end up a tooth out.

You could just use your turbo gears... They have marks and are the same part number.

But I guess that wouldn't do much since what your having trouble with is lining them up parallel in the rear. But it could help with getting the gears in the middle if their slots.

completely forgot about this. This helped me out so much. Crank at tdc (volvo's tdc lol), make my own tool to get the cames horizontal and hold them on the cover, install the cover. This actually looks really easy. Thank yuo!
