Walbro 255 Installed - Huge Problems - Stalling

Recommended Posts

I upgraded my stock fuel pump to a Walbro 255 pump yesterday. All went well, fit like a glove and I even soldered the connectors internaly just to be sure (the connector that shipped with it, that is).

Did the fuel filter at the same time.

I did the mod with a near empty tank, and all was well. I drove home (3 miles), then wanted to drive back to the workplace and it just stalled in the middle of the road. Pump didn't work _at all_. So no fuel. We towed it to a gas station, and I filled it up to the brim and it started right up. Drove 30 miles with it. So I assumed the pump didn't get as far to the bottom of the tank as my old one, and thought that was it.

Then today, with a 65 liter tank of petrol, I drove to the store. Trying to start it up again at the store (the car was slightly tilted, I'll give you that, 5 degrees maybe), it didn't do anything. Pump didn't do a thing. I even tried hooking it up directly to the 12v line of my subwoofer that was convieniently in the back, but nothing. The pump didn't budge. Got it towed to my parking spot, and there (on an incline) I could get the pump going again and the car started right up.

Now I'm having a major headache with this. It can't possibly be fuel starvation, I mean the tank is 90% full, I filled it last evening. The pump doesn't even go on when I put 12V on it - does it have a safety of some sort as to not pump air? Why would it not turn at all on 12v, and then suddenly work after a mile of towing? Surely the system doesn't need air bleeding as it's a continuous flow of petrol in there?

I just don't get it. Anyone who has experience with this pump? Why this is happening? I try to understand but I honestly can't.

Double check the electrical connectors and such. It actually does matter considering all the fake walbros being sold nowadays. I brought a walbro from summit that turned out to be garbage. The pump ran great the first day and everything went down hill after that. Crazy hard starts, (I'm talking 6 cranks to start), my afr gauge showed I was leaning out on the expressway when passing, checked fuel psi and it was 10 psi below spec. Brought a modified walbro from jay racing and I've had no problems since.

My bad. The new connector to the pump was a bad fit. It was so tightly squeezed, it wouldn't slide over the pump's contacts, even with maximum human force applied - which is why I thought the connector was tight. As a result, merely the tips of the plug and the connector touched, creating intermittent contact - which is I assume the root of my problems.

I took a screwdriver to pry the connector apart a bit, and now it fits all the way to the bottom. I assume all is fixed now :)

In the meantime GB Enterprises actually sought contact with me regarding this matter, and they confirmed to me that they sell only original Walbro equipment. Their service was really quick and to-the-point.

You're lucky you didn't get a spark inside the tank - when the pump was not submerged - would have been goodbye to you

Yeah, no, not quite... There's some basic chemistry involved in a sealed fuel tank (it's sealed air-tight for a reason..). Something like the need for presence of oxygen in the correct ratio towards the petrol vapor. The same way your car won't start if you plug your air intake at the manifold..

A year after putting a walbro 255 in my 850R, the plug a few inches away from the access port in the trunk started to decay and must have gotten hot cause it was fried inside. I cut it out and connected the wires together and haven't had a problem since. I miss my 850R, its been in the shop for 2 months now cause my guy is short handed and backed up.
