sjmcarz
My son(floggingmike) and I installed a sub today in his R, turned out really well! We found a 12" sub box that fit perfectly where we wanted it to, and the carpet color is almost spot on. His 12" subwoofer was not low profile, so we needed to rout 1/4" out of the back inside of the enclosure(photo) for magnet clearance. We used an Alpine 500w mono sub amp (300w with his 4 ohm Polk sub), and used a harness that interfaced directly with the SC-901 din plug http://www.discountcarstereo.com/AiH-VOL2.html to run rca's and the remote amp power wire to the back of the car. For the wiring we used this kit http://www.walmart.com/ip/Scosche-680W-8-Gauge-Wiring-Kit-for-Single-Amps/14667122 and it worked well. This is the box that we used http://www.ebay.com/itm/360485963178?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649. They come only in pairs, we used one, if someone local is interested in the other one it's yours for $35. firm. The only thing else that we needed was 12 gauge speaker wire which we sourced at best buy. We fastened the sub box to the removable side floor panel, and then fastened the floor panel to the floor with a couple of screws into the metal underneath to keep the box secure. We were thinking of also installing a bracket higher up, and may still do for extra security, but the box sits quite firm as it is. We were left with about 1/2"-3/4" clearance between the sub and the floor hatch when open, we should be able to find a speaker grille of some sort that will fit. We are extremely happy with the results, we were grinning at each other when we first listened to it! Great solid bass! Click on the thumbnail photos and scroll through them. floggingmike
What I've learned: more bass = more headaches
bostonbrick
clean install. Gotta love that fold up hatch perfect for hiding amps under.

When I have the funds and one goes for sale ill definitely pick it up!
JA VOLVO
Very clean! Will there be heat issues with the amp closed up under the hatch?
floggingmike
Very clean! Will there be heat issues with the amp closed up under the hatch? So far is doesnt seem to be heating up past normal temps, and theres a good amount of people I've seen running setups with their amps there without any issues. Serge
Good choice on the Alpine v-power. Their older amps are supposedly better than the new models.
benny33
Heat may be an issue depending on how hard he drives the amp. From personal experience, kids have trouble hearing when a speaker is being over-driven. Welcome to the bass club. If he's been bitten by the bug, this won't be the last time you run wire and upgrade sub setups.
floggingmike
The amp thats installed meets with the power requirements and such that the speaker needs, ive been checking it and it doesnt get any warmer than it should. The bass is enough (for now), im happy with it. It fills in the soundstage quite well and I've EQed it just the way I like it.
Joshdub
That looks great! Thanks for posting the links, I just pulled the trigger on a box and split the costs with a friend. $35 boxes ftw. Do you happen to know the mounting depth of the sub that you put in there?
whitev70r
Very clean install. I did a custom one a while back ago with 2x8's on the right side. I chose to go with the tighter base instead of mega power headache type . Only question I have is if you're putting all that work into upgrading stereo, why not start with getting rid of SC901? How do you play mp3's?
floggingmike
Do you happen to know the mounting depth of the sub that you put in there? The mounting depth of my speaker is 6", but we had to rout out around like a 1/4" for clearance on the backside, if you look at the pics above it should show it. If you didnt get your sub yet, id go with no more than 5 3/4" depth. Hope it all works out for you man. why not start with getting rid of SC901? How do you play mp3's? Im happy with the performance of the SC-901 honestly. I'm getting either a GROM or USASpec iPod interface pretty soon, and that where my source of music comes from. Right now if using a cassette adapter, but thats just in the meantime.

I am not worried about having to rout out anything but it is nice to know that you were able to get a 6" one to fit.
floggingmike
Yeah we put linoleum grease on the backend of the speaker where the magnet is to see where is was making contact, and just routed that out
