Volta55
some of you might recognize me from 30forty50, but I plan to sell my 02 v40 to come and get bricked I am blinded with alot of options when searching for pre-1998 volvos.. all of them i absolutely love cosmetically. I lean harder towards wagons. I have read some really helpful threads on here before registering, and it seems to me that 850s/ v70s are the most common volvo to have some fun with? i feel like all 240s, 700 series, 900 series volvos have alot of cosmetic potential to them; but i really do not know which way to steer. which series has more performance based/ cosmetic upgrades for them? sorry for laying such a broad question on you guys, im such a straight up f*kking noob. but i am swedish so that helps ALOT...... what i would have in mind would be a VERY clean stage 0 volvo, MAYBE close to 300BHP manual trannys are hard to come by around my area for I crapped my pants and I love how it feels an giggles, my 02 v40 w MBC @ 11psi, K&N, Ksport coilovers, 175K miles, so what you guys/gals think? ANY tips would be super helpful thanks jordan
ErikS
Welcome. From your first sentence if you are die hard looking for a brick, the 850 was the last one designed by Jan Wilsgaard, so how about an 850R wagon? Lots of options to get to around 300 bhp on the cheap.

WSMCKELVY
The 95 has OBD1 So just put in the jumper in, Read the codes, and fix what ever. There are parts all over the place. Plus the 95 wagon is the best looking. Or as a my son puts it..."That thing is a God Damn panty dropper"
Volta55
right on.. so it seems like an 850 wagon is in order!! time to search away some questions; - what is the difference between T5-R and R? - how hard is it to find a manual tranny? Keaton85
Find a manual to install? Or find a factory one? As it would have had to have been swapped by someone around here for that.
Piston Slapper
As much as I love the 850, I really think 98 is the go to year for fun times. The S/V70s are basically just a mid model facelift of the 850 with a new name tag, so many little improvements made, you'll only notice after having a long term 850 DD and then a x70 DD, I've gone back and forth, (95 850 to 98 V70 to 95 850GLT to 99 S70). Why 98 and not 99/00? Well if you're interested in performance, M4.4 cars are easier to modify and you don't have to deal with VIN matched components that you can't replace without having them programmed. erikv11
the T5-R designation was only used in 95 model year R's. I'd agree that 98 is a good way to go, except the 98 R is AWD so go 98 T5 unless you are willing to tote around the AWD as well.
Piston Slapper
I wouldn't consider the AWD as something to lug around, the T5 and R have a bit too much powah for FWD only, especially if you're raising the output. Torque steer is bad mkay?
erikv11
A good proportion of the 98 AWDs are now FWD because of component failure. If the AWD better fits your goals, then sure, get it and maintain it.
Piston Slapper
I think a good chunk of those AWD to FWD switches were done to make a manual swap easier, common, straight swap M56 vs rare, straight swap M58 or expensive, fitment modification M66. But, yes, tons of people just pull the driveshaft when it acts up and never get around to replacing it, even if they had intended to.
