Turbo Sizing

Hello folks.

Trying to figure out what the best size turbo would be for my car, yes I have done reading on here and other sites but I thought some people might be able to help me out, and share some opinions.

Car is a 96 855 T-5M, engine is from a 95 855 T-5R, has cx racing 4340 forged rods, 139.5 mm.

Stock pistons, stock head

NA manifold with NA TB and 960 plate

can get 93 glt cams very easily if it would make any difference... otherwise stock cams

will be using either an R manifold (internal wastegate) or ATP manifold (external) depending on turbo

my goal is 380-400 whp

plan on using a spec stage 3+, siemens 630cc injectors, ard fuel pump yada yada..

Currently have a 19T, but have heard from other sources that the difference in power between it and a 15G is not as much as you would expect. I am putting a lot of work into this motor, and would like to be satisfied with the change. With that said! I will list off the turbos I am currently considering, and my positives and negatives for each.

gt2871r

+'s Fast spool, responsive turbo

-'s small for gt series, may not make power I wish to. Also, t28 flange will require some adaptation, and a custom tune will be needed

Gt3076

+'s should make enough power no problem, can get an ard black tune (eliminates need for ttusb) faster spool than gt35

-'s slower spool than gt2871r

Gt3582

+'s can make the power I want now, and lots more later should I decide to put the work in.

-'s slow spool, custom tune, may not be in peak effiency at level I wish to be at. May be too much for stock pistons?

Anyhow, Im leaning towards the GT30, but if anyone else wants to throw something at me that would be appreciated, ALSO if there are any other turbo's really worth mentioning I'd love to hear about them, Ive always got an open ear.

Cheers!

Who are you going to use for tuning? I can highly recommend ARD.

I would go with the Gt35, personally. Go big, or go home, right? :)

I love the idea of the gt35 for that reason lol, but I was under the impression that the largest turbo lucky had a map for on his black tune was a gt30... someone please correct me if I am wrong, that is just the impression I was under. But yes when the time comes I would love an m4.4 ARD black tune, I have bought numerous products from ARD now and have nothing but good things to say also! If, however lucky could not do a gt35 or gt28, and I decide that is a better way for me to go, then I would probably have to resort to a turbo tuner usb. my biggest concern with the gt35 (other than that) is if it will be too much on my stock pistons, I know people run gt30's on stock pistons and a good tune without an issue, but I have heard very little about gt35's.

*I should also note the driving the car will be doing is mostly highway, but I run it at the 1/4 as much as I can, and I intend to take the car to some road courses, although a track car is not the plan for it. More straight line then bends. and yes I know I may not have the right car for that but I like a challenge lol*

I have not gotten in direct contact with him yet about the injectors or whatnot, I had just heard that they were a good option. Perhaps the sources I had heard that from were having better luck with them on TTUSB? Green giants or larger Bosch injectors are fine, I am just in a situation where $600 Bosch injectors vs $250 siemens is going to slow my process down alot. But if the Bosch are better than I will have to work towards a set of them instead. As far as the breather, I intend to have a catch can, are there any writeups on upgrading the block breather system itself? I will look around on here tommarow I am off to bed tonight is all. Thanks for the input!

Stock pistons and old head are limiters, as is un-vented block. You will need to modify the crankcase breather system.

DId Lucky suggest Siemens injectors? They often do not play nice with M4.x

I think people have issues with the siemen injectors because turbo tuner does not offer the feature of changing the injector latency and battery voltage correction table.

My thoughts as well. But take that with a grain of salt because I couldn't care less about making torque below 4500 rpm. The only reason I have a 16G on my own car is that I wanted something that a completely stock engine could handle.

And for the record, Lucky can tune for any turbo as long as the hardware is there to support it.

Thought about a 20G, but to me if I'm putting in the work of new lines downpipe etc. Then I would rather have something with a bit more kick, even if I don't use it to the full potential now I like the idea that I can expand later. As far as the siemens injectors, I like them (especially for the price) and if I can use them I would like to. I just need to make sure I have the best for my application. And good to know about lucky, that opens up the gt35 quite a bit more to me... Excellent.

Cheers

As far as the head and pistons, it's just not in my budget right now.. I'm going to school January and will be making minimum wage until then, and so it will be hard for me to even do the turbo this year, but I will find a way. I would like to get an RN head in the future and toss that on as it would be alot more reasonable than getting a stock head machined, and is said to flow very similarly. But for now it will be stock pistons and head

I have Siemens 630cc Injectors and haven't really had any issues, what issues do people have?

I couldn't get Siemens injectors to idle. AFR's would be all over the place. Bosch injectors, right every time. I think Zappo also had trouble with them, and several UK people ditched TT because they couldn't use Deka/Siemens etc. Since TTusb is just an overlay, I would have assumed the issue is with M4.x.

You didn't have any issues calibrating or idling with them? Are you only running E or do you also run pump gas? Maybe tuning for Ethanol removes the issue, I dunno...

The problem is the early block has no internal vents between the cylinders. It's fine for low HP setups, 350WHP is pushing it. On my old block, I added a very large external can to allow the CC pressure to vent, the oil to drain back, and the vapor to pass into a CC. From there, you can VTA or recirc like stock. Homer (on TB, he has a thread in the showroom [Whiteblock in a 240] you can link from) successfully uses a Provent can fed from the stock breather box, with increased ID (over 1/2") feed and outlet hoses, that may be the simplest solution for you.

Some of you know what happened to me at the track. Oil spewed all over the engine. I have not spoken up since. I have been working on the vent system. I thought it was oil coming up the vent tube but it turned out to be oil coming up the drain tube and just getting pushed out. I went overkill and purchased a second ProVent 200 then put it in series with the first. I also added one way check valves to the drains. Issue resolved and I probably didnt need the second ProVent...its been totally dry ever since. Vents back into the intake so there is no stank.
