scifigreg
Where are some good amp grounding points in the 850?
andyb5
The chassis. But really. Where do you want to mount your amp?
scifigreg
Oh yeah, I suppose that would be a useful thing to add. Amps are trunk mounted. I've found a few places that can work, but I'm just wondering where the most effective ground might be.
andyb5
I've grounded my amps to either the chassis (grind away the paint to bare metal) or there is a ground for the talights that I'm currently using.
scifigreg
Where did you attach it to the chassis? Did you access it from the interior or did you run the ground to the exterior of the vehicle? When I installed my amps, I got lazy and made a temporary ground on the metal of the rear deck lid by grounding down the paint. This wasn't a great ground, but it did its job, now I'm wanting to do a more proper ground. I may run a ground from the battery and make up the difference of the cable resistance with a second ground on the chassis.
andyb5
Do you have a wagon or sedan? I grounded on the chassis about 1' from the back of the car, on the frame rail on the inside of the car. With 1/0 power and grounds, I have no voltage drop from the battery
scifigreg
sedan. I'll have to look at that frame rail. I am running 1/0 gauge as well. I may switch from 1 run of 1/0 copper clad aluminum to two runs of 100% copper 4 gauge cable so that I my carpet will lay more flat. Unless you found a good place to run the cable that it would disturb the interior panels/carpet
andyb5
I have a V70, so it maybe be a bit different but I don't have a problem running mine along the sill at the edge of the carpet
scifigreg
hmm, mine makes it so I can't really put all the interior trim pieces in as well as I should. I don't really have a problem changing the cable size. I'm only running ~500 on a sub amp and ~80 a piece to my front speakers. So I think two runs of 4 gauge will be sufficient for me even if I decide to increase power by a bit down the road.
Piston Slapper
I usually use a self tapping bolt to attach the ground to chassis in the trunk, don't bother scraping paint away because the bolt will conduct just fine.
