Can Anyone Help Me Pick A Muffler For A New Cat Back?

Doesn't a resonator just quiet down the interior noise of the car's exhaust? That's what the guy at the custom Exhaust place told me...

So you really recommend two mufflers, huh? I think the Resonator -> Dynomax VT -> Magnaflow 5X8 is going to be my best bet for high performance with a fairly quiet sound that opens up when I step on it... You agree?

Also, I might be interested in buying it, which one and how much? Message me.

Thanks!

OBX = loud but in the long run trying to save a $ it may be the way to go.

I am trying to help him make it quiet, free flowing and loud when it needs to be but not all the time.

I bought and tried out 8 muffler setups to get here. All I have is advice.

Resonators only take the rasp off the top.

I don't consider it too loud... He said he wants to be able to hold a conversation and listen to music and having had my OBX for 19,000 miles I can honestly say neither of those is a problem in my car.

In the end everyone has their own style but of everyone I've spoken with and shown my car to likes the OBX sound (except JRL lol)

If you're going for more horses and less restriction/heat... getting a 3 inch downpipe is most important. If you have the money, do the full exhaust also.

I have a 3 inch dp

3 inch magnaflow cat

2.5 inch magnaflow suitcase looking muffler

2.5 inch magnaflow straight through resonator

Sounds reeaaaly deep at idle. WOT isn't obnoxious loud. No drone at all. It's perfect for me. Although I'm thinking of letting go of the big muffler. I didn't get the stainless one so it's starting to rust a little. It's at the back and I can't get the ipd tip that I want. Hoping it doesn't make the car drone.

Yeah I'm not totally down to go the OBX route...

At this point Boxpin has it exactly right, I'm looking for something that is quiet most of the time, except when I rip it up and step on it a bit where I would want it a bit louder!

It sounds like going Resonator -> Dynomax VT -> Magnaflow 5X8 is going to be my best bet... Although what if I put just the magnaflow where the stock muffler is now so it has some pipe to go through before exiting the exhaust? Would that be pretty quiet or would I have a better chance of achieving the sound I want by putting just the Dynomax? I really don't want to have two mufflers but if I really had to I guess it could be an option.

Thanks,

Max

Also, he has a full 3" turbo back exhaust, which will change the sound of the exhaust relative to how yours would sound with a 2.5" cat back

Here's an easy way to get a nice sounding free flowing exhaust

nice post quote...:P

I have always found my OBX to be quite quiet even after 3 years of hard use. Also, I should say disappointingly quiet.

really? it sounds like bees in a can to me. each to its own i guess

I have to say it sounds like every other exhaust I have ever installed or seen on a Volvo I5 except its quiet by comparison except at idle where it sounds about the same but at WOT much quieter.

I'm with you on this, the only time I would even remotely consider the OBX to be loud is at WOT, even then still MUCH quieter than most cars with any aftermarket exhaust.
