Volvo C70 (2002) Sc-816 Radio Ipod Interface

Hi everyone,

As newcomer, let me introduce myself as being based in Portugal and proud owner of a V70 T5 (2001) and a recently acquired C70 Convertible (2002). Also as a music-lover which brings me to this topic.

My aim: installing a fully-integrated interface between my iPod classic and the C70’s SC-816 Volvo radio that allows me to:

i) fully control my iPod (namely playlists) using the radio equipment;
ii) charge my iPod while connected; and
iii) see the song name on radio display (not sure if whether this a radio-specific feature).

My questions:

Products
1. Are the devices below any good?
Yatour
Electronicx
GROM

2. Do they allow for my aim above?
3. Are there other alternatives?
4. What ports and harnesses do I need to ensure exist? (e.g., can a device that connects to iPod through its 3.5mm port (where one connects headphones) affirm that it allows control and charge the iPod through radio head unit?)

Reliability & References
5. Does anybody have experience on whether these solutions work seamlessly?

Installation
6. I’m an amateur DIY-challenged. Instructions are quite extensive on what to connect where: guess is a 9-pin DIN cable (8-pin?) to the back of the SC-816 radio, where currently (one assumes) the cd.-changer cable connects. What then? Where do I place the device without have cables hanging around? Alternatively, would I not be able to connect this at the back (trunk)?

Any help most appreciated!!!
Best regards

GROM, USA-SPEC and Blitzsafe are the three known solutions that people have used on this forum.

I have a Blitzsafe and it accomplishes the following:

1. Charge the iPod

2. Will treat the iPod as a CD changer and allow you to use the first 5 playlists with the 1-5 buttons on the stereo.

3. Volume is controlled with the stereo volume control knob

You cannot fast forward through songs with the controls.

Others will have to chime in on the other solutions. To my knowledge no existing solution offers an interface where you can see the track names on the stereo screen.

Oh, here's a discussion of the Grom - sounds like it might support track name presentation on the screen:

Burn-E, thanks very much. Didn't notice GROM allowed track presentation on screen (it actually says in ebay.co.uk link) - but radio permitting. Not sure as to whether my SC-816 actually allows that (I've noticed CD's bought in shop do not show track songs, but not sure if this means that the radio has not that facility). If you happen to know, let me know, otherwise I'll search in manual/internet.

Thanks!

For most of these you clip them in behind the stereo and pack them into the wires back there then run the connecting wire to the ipod up through the center console and out under the side or bring it through the coin pocket under the ash tray (small modification by discreetly cutting space for the wire with a dremel ) or through the dash into the glove compartment or through the pocket under the armrest and store it there.

Thanks for the advice. Very useful. I'm inclined to take the glove compartment route and keeping the devide accessible - one detail is, in order to do that I'd have to open a hole through the walls of the glove compartment, through which the cable would pass. Let's see...

Another thing: connections at the back of SC-816 radio

The chinese guy from Yatour presents a 6-pin connection for the SC-816 radio (don't know how to insert pictures here). But the SC-816 radio has actually a 8-pin socket. The guy says the 6-pin will fit into the 8-pin.

Question: there's no way of the 6-pin plug fit into the 8-pin socket, right? The strange thing is the ebay advert especlituiy satys (and he confirmed) this would eb a C70 2002 compatible adapter.

Many thanks for your help.

PS: how does one insert pictures in here?

Get a photobucket account. Load your pictures there. Then insert the photos by including the link to that photo using the image link above in the toolbar (looks like a square picture).

I don't see a Volvo option on Yatour's site. Not sure how a 6 pin plug is going to work in an 8 pin socket unless the two pins they leave out aren't required.

Thanks, agree. I think I'll opt for one of the alternatives. Guess the GROM only advantage is the ability to display track name. The only thing is that I'm not yet sure as to whether my SC-816 radio is cabable of such - searching and asking everywhere, with no success.

Anyway, thanks!

Thanks Deimos.

It might be a good idea. Just concerned with price and (sorry, this is lame!) aesthetics.

Could you indicate examples of low-to-mid range radios that would seemlessly integrate my C70 (2002) dashboard and what sort of iPod inegreation facilities they feature?

Thanks very much!

Well, it won't quite be seemless, but it looks good, more modern... the double din is a bit smaller than the factory radio, so there's a little adapter you'll need.

Pioneer AVH-X1500DVD

Pioneer AVH-X2500BT

Would probably be good choices for you, both have ipod integration with the ipod style controls on the touchscreen. The main difference is the 2500 has bluetooth, the 1500 does not. The USB port is on the back of the unit, so you could run the ipod connector or a usb extension to the glove box or center console.
