Tranny Cooler

Recommended Posts

Since we lost all of our threads from the past concerning this issue I need to ask:

What Tranny cooler do you all use for your Transaxles? Summer is coming and I think I might throw a Tranny cooler in my car. I know those degrees really do a number on the Trans. Thanks guys.

B&M is easy install. I would recommend buying any extra tranny cooler line and having both lines required for the B&M install fabed at your local hose shop (should not cost much). Makes life easier. Plus you have a stock line if you need to disconnect the tranny cooler for any reason. Generally the lines they put on fabbed pieces are higher quality than the OEM lines. I have had three sets made, and all of them cost about $30-40 and were beautiful.

The ones I sent Nathan were even blue! Man that's like +5 hp right there! :D

Well, looking at the diagram, it looks like the Volvo supplimental cooler is designed to be hooked in series w/ the main tranny cooler, which is how I'm doing my B&M... methinks it's either neglible strain, or that the pump was designed to handle it. But I'm also assuming Volvo wouldn't sell an accessory that killed their tranny...

Everybody I know (including myself) that has a B&M uses it in line with the stock cooler, nobody has ever had a problem. It's not that much more for the pump to handle.

What's cool is when you drive in the rain with the cooler then stop and see steam coming off of it ;)

I bought the B&M cooler also. I haven't put it in yet but I've got the lines and fittings ready to go. I went with rubber lines and the male slip on coupling fittings held with hose clamps. I had a lot of trouble finding a place to crimp hoses and the hard lines are just that. Hard, plus you need a bender. I've got like 12 bucks into this install not including the cooler. heh

Keep in mind that those lines don't have to be really high pressure rated. Its not a power steering line after all. Low pressure oil recirc is all.

My plan is to run the line from the tranny (through an ipd filter) to the B&M FIRST. And then to the factory line into the radiator. My theory is that if the car is just started and warming up the radiator will actually warm the trans fluid before the car has even started to move. If the tranny fluid is very hot then the B&M will cool it significantly before taxing the radiator any more than is necessary. To me that is a win win situation. I don't like the idea of sending ice cold (relatively) oil to the tranny with the B&M AFTER the radiator.

Just my theory. And since I pull a dirtbike trailer with as many as 3 scoots....I'm pretty concerned about my trans.

Actually...part of me is hoping my tranny takes a dump. Then I would *need* a 5 speed. oops :)

Will be more effective with B&M after stock cooler, becuase when you are moving the coolant will cool down some in the RAD, then cool down more in the B&M. Otherwise you are cooling it and then heating it again with the RAD.

The tranny is still pressurized, you don't want a leak to develop so be careful. If a decent leak appears the tranny is very able to pump all of the fluid out through this hole very quickly.
