P2 V70/xc Or 855T5M

Hey everyone,

As some of you may know I have a 96 855 T5M I have put ALOT of love into. I really really like my car but it's getting to be a money pit, every time I turn around it's another $300 here or there. My parents have an 02 v70 T5 which I absolutely love, it's way more comfortable than my car on a regular basis and gets substantially better mileage... So I have considered getting a P2 wagon. Now I would love to keep both cars but I'm going to college this January and my parents have a two car driveway and I'm parking on the road as it is... So that's not an option. I'm just afraid the 850 will put me in the poorhouse in school. So I could use some help here. The cheapest P2's to get into seem to be xc's which I like alot but have heard are not the most reliable. But to be fair I have heard most 01-02's are problematic, and this is most likely the age I would be looking at. I saw an 04 v70R with a 6speed for $6000 that had me drooling but it's too far out of my budget. So any thoughts or input is appreciated, cheers. Also I'd rather not go NA as to be fair I think I would just get bored after having my car. And my last thing is I would probably be getting an auto as well as manuals also demand a premium and are hard to get in good shape, even though I am leaning towards an xc anyway so that is irrelevant... Cheers

I'm assuming that you already own the olive. Getting into a P2 may require to get a car note, which means instead of 300 here or there... it's 300 a month. Plus, you've put a lot into the 850. It's impossible to get that money back at time of resale.

XC's are cool... but early P2's I believe were plagued with glass transmissions. You could manual swap one... but that's a 2K venture in and of itself.

So, my vote is keep the 850.

I can understand the frustration of thinking you will always be putting money into it, but once you get everything squared away (which you have already started doing) you will find it to be quite reliable and sound. As its been mentioned above, you already own the 850, and getting a newer P2 will most likely result in monthly payments. Unless you drop a good amount of money on a very meticulously maintained P2, you will still find yourself having to cough up cash for maintenance items on top of your monthly payment. Also if you are leaning towards a P2 XC, that is even more parts and systems to maintain and have to spend money on.

In conclusion, my opinion is keep the 850.

Well right now I have been spending about $300 a month on average for the past year fixing things on it, and it's just getting to a point where I'm tired of it, I look at it like for $300 a month I could be paying to have a newer car. But to be fair if I bought a p2 I would be spending between 3000-4000$'s on it rather than financing one. From what I have seen I could get a half decent second hand one for about that. I mean on my 850 my tranny clunks like crazy, the abs doesn't work, seat heaters don't work, half the interior trim is missing because It broke and rattled, I have a different colored tailgate on it because the stock one rusted out, the alignment is screwed, it leaks oil like crazy, I just did the pcv a year ago and it needs it again... Needs brakes all around including calipers and flex hoses, needs both front wheel bearings, the seat heaters don't work, it needs a heater core and lines, even though it is my fault because I did a fmic and hit the condenser by accident it's worth mentioning the AC doesn't work, handbrake barely works, dash lights are burning out, moonroof leaks when it rains, I mean it's just making me tired thinking about it lol. That's not the whole list even. And this is stuff I need to do before I can continue doing anything related to performance, which will be even more money spent. I just think if I could find a half decent P2 that might need some basic maintenance stuff done and I could start doing the fun stuff again I would feel better about my car. I just hate doing work that seems to make no improvement, Especially if it's not the first Time I've done it. But when my car works I do love it. It's fast, it's comfortable to me, and it's just a riot to drive. But I feel like I'm spending more time under it than in it... And more coming out of my wallet than anything. Cheers

Alternatively, you could spend money on a more sound 850 or X70, seeing as you have a decent list of mods for your car... move your wanted parts over... then have the best of both worlds.

I totally get where you're coming from, and your argument is sound except for the XC AWD and saving money part. By that, I mean AWD cars require even more maintenance attention, which translates to more dollars. I would suggest like a 98 V70 T5M if you can find it.

Lol give me a break I haven't gone to college YET. And my problem is that my car is pretty rare... It's a factory 5 speed turbo wagon.. So I wouldn't really want to get a different 850, I need a wagon and I wouldn't be happy with an auto one.. And to be perfectly honest, I prefer 850's to first generation v70's. I know it may sound weird to some people, but I feel like the interior in a first gen v/s70 feels cheaper, to me, than an 850's does. And I prefer the look of the 850. If I was going to change cars I would go P2 because I really do like them, and they are comparable in price these days to first gen cars, at least around here. My budget would be between $3000-$4000, I would save some parts I could use on the other car off my 850 and sell it for maybe 2-3k. One of the things I do like about my car is how clean the body is, with the exception of the hatch. I don't know, maybe I am best to keep the 850, I just hate feeling like I'm burning money. Thanks for all the input everyone, cheers

The P2s are way more comfortable, every time I drive one I'm amazed how quiet and smooth they ride as opposed to the rattles of my P80s. They are both great platforms IMO and have their own pros and cons.

I'd look for a V70 T5m, both P80 and P2, and get whichever one you find first as they are rare cars of course, but you can find them.
