atefitty
Picked up this 1997 850 n/a yesterday for $675. Kinda rough, it has a blown head gasket and some body damage fromsomeone "backing into it" as the previous owner said. Damage confined to mostly the hood and a couple small dents in each fender. Drivers seat is torn. Starter sounds tired. I see a cam cover locking tool set on ebay from $100-300 for what looks to be the same set. What all do I need to get other than a head gasket set? Are the head bolts re-useable or do I need to replace them? I've done a lot of work on Volvo's but never a head gasket and I want to see if I can have success. It seems though if I just get another whole motor it may even be a better option and cost nearly the same. Any thoughts?http://
Tightmopedman9
The best writeup out there: http://www.tracystruesoaps.com/tutorials/850hg/p1.html Replaced the head bolts, they are not re-usable.
Simply Volvo
Also you dont need the cam locking tool or the cam cover pull down tool, they are unnecessary. Everything can be lined up by eye.
atefitty
Thats a very thorough write up, thanks..I'm thinking I can get another motor for around 400-600 if I'm lucky. Looking at the cost of sending the head out and having it checked and the cost of a head gasket set and bolts it still seems more reasonable to get another motor. This car is blowing a lot of smoke when running. It would be cool to open it up and see exactly what going on in there.
atefitty
yeh, I see a lot of post about people using cam locking tools for timing belt removal. Shoot, if it moves you just move it back. What up with this obsession with cam locking tools. I can see the need for one when removing the cam cover as it holds everything steady and keeps the cams safe when removing the cover. the guy in the write up made his own. "From a bunch of scraps!." "But I'm not Tony Stark.",haha.

Why the fuck does she remove the starter, serpentine belt, and fan shroud? Replacing the head is actually really easy. I just did a hg gasket about a month ago with no write up. You really don't need one, it's very straight forward. No need to remove the starter, serpentine belt, or fan though. Also you dont need the cam locking tool or the cam cover pull down tool, they are unnecessary. Everything can be lined up by eye. Agreed, they are pointless. Haven't used one ever. atefitty
On some models you need to remove it to see the mark, but not the 850's. She removed the starter to put in her little wedge on the crank.

atefitty
http://http://http:// Did a compression test and came up with these numbers. Cylinders 2 and 3 looked wet inside. From what I understand no cylinder should be less than 75% of the highest cylinder. cylinder 1. 185psi 2. 165psi 3. 160psi 4. 190psi 5. 190psi
