atefitty
I also found this little surprise while inspecting the battered 850. Somebody fashioned their own connector for the transmission cooler line. Nice. ">http://
atefitty
http:// So I'm more leaning towards just replacing the head gasket on the battered wagon instead of swapping in a motor. I checked the oil and it doesn't have that milkshake look to it. A couple cylinders looked wet inside and the plugs look wet. I really dont see mixing of the oil though. It does smoke like crazy when running though. Now I got to figure out what all this is going to cost.
TIZIO AKA 1 HND MEC
The smoke is from the valve steam seals, with that compression across the block I wouldn't touch the HG. My 0.
B Mac
Leave the head gasket alone. You're compression is fine for all intents and purposes, you'd know if you were down a cylinder

Yes you would. Just recently being there, if you were down a cylinder, there would be absolutely no doubt about it.
B Mac
Also, I purchased the head repair tools because I fix a lot of broken crap so it was worth it. It really does make the job easier if you're tearing it all apart.

My 0.2 Don't I have to remove the head to do the Valve stem seals? Leave the head gasket alone. You're compression is fine for all intents and purposes, you'd know if you were down a cylinder On a positive note I don't see any evidence of water in the oil...No milkshake..I was assuming all the smoke was coolant getting by the gasket and going through the exhaust.Could all the smoke be from the PCV system alone? Rsterns
Don't I have to remove the head to do the Valve stem seals? No, not if you have the correct tools...
atefitty
No, not if you have the correct tools... Cool. I'm going to drive the Battered Wagon and see if it is loosing coolant or just smoking..Need to redo my compression test as I did not open the throttle plate on my dry test. From what I understand if I have 2 adjacent cylinders low it probably is a head gasket failure. At least 2 of the cylinders did appear to have moisture on top of the piston. At any rate I'm ready to start taking this thing apart.
