boxpin
I just picked these up for my build and wanted to post a picture of them. There has been a lot of talk on what to use for the rods. Either OEM or Toga. I ran the Togas but as some of you know I cracked my rings with a spout of detonation. There were some marks on the toga bearings that made me question their strength and ability to recover from that force. I did some research and came across a technology invented by Glyco, Its called Sputter. The bearings are pricey and come in individual boxes. Someone mentioned that Volvo OEM were sputter but I cannot find anything to support that claim. I know these are and am going to give them a go. https://www.highpowermedia.com/RET-Monitor/3445/what-are-sputtered-bearings
Tightmopedman9
Did you go with sputter just for the rod side, or did you get a set for the caps too?
boxpin
Only the rod side of the bearing is sputter, where the load is.
ErikS
Jan used Glyco sputter on his 850, that engine took some serious abuse.
Simply Volvo
What are you going to do about piston rings? Titanium?
boxpin
The pistons are fine, the rings are not. But, I am going Wiseco and boring.
lookforjoe
Can you share the vendor/product #'s? Would be worth keeping fro future reference. I've had good luck with Toga so far, but you never know DTR.
Johann
Those are the standard Glyco for turbo 5 cylinder. Used to be a set of 5 bearings, now they sell boxed per bearing. 71-3926 STD There was some talk about some people using the sputter on the rod side and non on the cap side. I bought a full set and have not decided yet. I am open to opinions. The box comes with one sputter cap per bearing set which goes rod side. I pulled the second bearing out and it is indeed not a sputter. Glyco sells two different bearings for the motor. Dont get them mixed up. Standard Bearings: 71-3754/5 or 272197 Sputter Bearings: 71-3926
