1999 V70 Glt Valve Tick Question

My father and I recently purchased a 1999 V70 GLT. It was always dealer serviced and I had all records given to me when I bought it. It has 110,000 miles. One day, the valves started to tick. The ticking has since gotten louder. My father said there has been a slight loss of power and when accelerating the engine makes noise like it is trying but does not seem to pull as hard. We took it to a dealer this weekend to be looked at.

According to their inspection there is a problem with the variable valve timing mechanism. They said there is a special kit to fix this that only the dealer has and costs $2060. Does that sound right or could it be something else?

Other things of note: Occasionally the oil light would flicker but the previous owner said the dealer had looked several different times and determined it was a sensor issue. Our dealer told us the same thing. Our inspection also revealed that the strut mounts are bad.

Thank you for your help!

Hello,

Oil light flickering and valve noise are likely related. Oil sump o-rings become brittle and allow the pump to suck air, thus causing the noise and flickering light. Volvo had a Tech-Net note on it, not sure of the number off-hand...

Seal kit is fairly inexpensive, paid around $25 for mine if I recall. Not too bad of a job, but the oil pan must be dropped and maneuvered down. Also need the Volvo sealer for the pan reinstallation (not sure what that costs as I already had a partial tube on hand).

Hope this helps,

Joe

Could be a few items of concern here, not just sump o-rings.

Before getting into any details, do you have a CEL and if so, what are the stored codes. This is number one on the list of items to check BEFORE proceeding with 20 questions.

Also, the dealer has no "special" tools for doing the VVT.

Oil was just changed with Mobil 1, which did not help one bit. Old oil was fine, no junk in it. Here is the code and notes from the dealer, I typed right from the printout they gave me:

1. CEL code P0014 - CAM POSITION

2. TECH ADVISED VEHICLE HAS STORED DTC ECM-644 --FAULTY POSITION. TECH ADVISED VEHICLE WILL NEED VARIABLE VALVE TIMING SOLENOID, HAB AND OIL PAN SEALS. RECOMMEND REPLACEMENT OF TIMING BELT AND SERPENTINE BELT.

The timing belt was done before I bought the car.

VVT solenoid needs to be replaced or whoever did the timing belt messed it up. The solenoid is VERY easy to replace. Has it always had this issue or did it just start acting up? Since if the timing belt was done incorrectly it would be like this from the first time you drove it away from the sale.

Changing the oil will not change a thing.

Dealer serviced means nothing, it's actually worse, sadly.

Remove spark plug cover, unbolt VVT solenoid. Reverse above steps for install.

Fcpeuro.com has the solenoid, and buy the gasket as well as the new gasket has a built in filter basket that was added. Before replacing you could try cleaning it or testing it. Although I can't remember what the test procedure is for that solenoid.

VVT solenoid is a common failure item and the new part requires grafting in a new harness lead. Be careful with this, as wires and looms can be brittle from heat.

You might also ask someone who has the crankcase pressure gauge to take a reading from the dipstick and see if it's in spec. You may have some carbon buildup, which is also common on the 99-00 motors.

So I ordered all the parts necessary. We made an appointment with the mechanic to bring the car in. He said my father could keep driving the car in the meantime.

Yesterday as he was driving, there was a cloud of black smoke out of the tailpipe. All the oil was gone after he stopped. We towed it to the shop and now apparently the turbo has gone bad. Does that make sense? I have a feeling they are trying to rip us off.

They quoted me $1100 for a turbo plus gaskets, spark plugs?, and labor for $1700 total. Seriously? The mechanic did say they would let me bring in my own part if I could buy a good used turbo somewhere. Ebay is the default place, I don't see any in the for sale section. They told me the 99 V70 GLT has two different turbos and they are not interchangeable. How can I tell which one I need?

VERY uncommon for a turbo to fail on these, but if something else was wrong it could have caused a failure. Without little info, there is no way to tell. Sounds pretty spot on with the amount of oil that went through the exhaust.

These have a 13T turbo, and they are a dime a dozen and hard to even get rid of since it's a rare failure and no one wants them. Two different turbos? not really, just the 13T on the XC series. it's about 2-3hrs worth of labor.
