850T5M
So a while ago I posted about my HG being blown...I finally need to do something about it, as the car is leaking way too much coolant and is starting to smoke a bit of white out the tailpipe. I'm gonna be ordering the parts tonight, hopefully from FCP as I think the'ye having a "cyber monday" sale with 10% off everything. So, anyone have a complete list of parts that I need? I guess timing belt/water pump should be changed as well. Do the tensioners need to be changed? Whats the OEM brand for the HG...do I buy that at Volvo directly, or does FCP have a good one that I could use? How many HG bolts do I need? Basically, does anyone have a complete parts list? Thanks so much P.s. Car is a 94 850 Turbo, Manual, Canadian
850T5M
Is "Victor Reinz" the OEM or OE for our cars? If not, are their gaskets any good?
Commander Riker
I'm not sure what kit is better then another... but you might consider getting a set of ARP head studs while you're in there. I have yet to see a case where it isn't a sound investment.
Keaton85
Headgasket set head bolts if you want timing belt and ALL rollers You don;t have to remove the intake or the exhaust, and when you reinstall the head, dab a little silicone onto the exhaust gaskets and coolant gasket and stick them onto the head. just do a thin layer around the bolt holes, as this keeps them stock on there when you put the head back on so you don;t have to fight to get them between the head and the manifold. julian
you'll also need the sealant for the upper part of the head. cam seals if they are old. pcv since intake is off. not sure how keaton did a HG without removing the intake or exhaust tho. heh i used string to hold the cams in the upper head and lowered the assembly down. then used c-clamps to squeeze them together. Keaton85
No need to remove either manifolds. just unbolt and remove the head. The exhaust manifold will just need a quick pry to get it off the studs but nothing special. That is if any of the studs stayed in the head which some times they don't. It's a MAJOR waste of time and adds no benefit by removing either of them.
Piston Slapper
Headgasket set head bolts if you want LOL wut? Head bolts are not an 'if you want' item. They're a 'do them unless you want to have to do the job again' item. They are one time use only. If your head had bolts, you must throw them away and replace with either new bolts or ARP studs. ARP studs are reusable, stretch bolts are not.
Keaton85
I have never replaced a single head bolt, ever. They work perfectly fine reusing them one more time. Personal opinion... Hundreds of thousands of miles on reused bolts without issue.
burnout8488
Kind of surprises me what I learn from techs that have done these jobs a hundred times. I was about to go start an HG on my 96 today and never thought about leaving the manifolds on... And yes, I believe Victor Reinz is the OEM for these head gaskets. Good stuff. Hundreds of thousands of miles on reused bolts without issue. Stock volvo head bolts are torque to yield. Meaning, you tighten them to a specified PSI, then stretch them with X amount of additional turns. While I'm sure you re-used your bolts and have lots of miles with everything being ok... that's not how they are designed. Volvo uses good parts, which is likely why you've gotten away with it. Not to mention they are more then adequately sized for these motors, IMO. Still... I'd ARP if I was there.

Last time I ordered I went back and forth about this. Does anybody still get the 10%?

Last time I ordered I went back and forth about this. Does anybody still get the 10%? this is coming from someone that doesnt have a supporting membership, so how would you know such specifics? I just used it on a tune-up kit for my 244. $16 off i think he did ^^^^^^ Ahh the old reuse or dont reuse debate. i personally would NOT reuse, there are those that will. tomato/tomatoe choice is yours OP, seasoned pro, Keaton85 that does it all the time says no. DIYers like me and many others say change it, yes.
cn90
This is a BIG job, so do it right. 1. HG: get it from dealer. Anything else is a gamble. 2. Head bolts: TTY bolts, should be replaced because they are stretched during installation. They are not expensive. 3. Anaerobic gasket: Volvo brand is expensive. Search for Loctite or Permatex brands, cheaper alternative. 4. Replace EVERYTHING in the Timing Belt compartment (unless some parts are new). Detail about where to buy parts are here: http://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=53722 PS: I don't know where you can buy parts shipped to Montreal, but try: http://www.thevpstore.com
Ghost Shadow
Seems like a mixed bag of advice there.only buy dealer gasket, but buy a cheap sealer. So buy a nice set of wheels, but get a cheap set of tires. That advice doesn't make sense to me.
