Muffler Or Resonator?

Hey guys!

So I finished the last step to stage 0 my car today. After that, at the mechanics suggestion for yielding a bit more power out of the car, went to an exhaust place and took the muffler out. Right now I am just running a straight pipe. Honestly, it really isn't that loud. The only problem is, at 65 MPH, drone starts to start, which is at about 2500 RPM. The straight pipe is great at every other speed except 65 MPH.

My question is, would a resonator alone get rid of the drone that I am getting at 65 MPH? Or should I put a 5X8X14 Magnaflow at the end of the exhaust. If both would do it, I might drive with the current exhaust a bit more to really decide but I would probably go with the Magnaflow just to quiet it down a bit.

Thanks for the help,

Max

I have a magnaflow cat and resonator and that's it, I used to have a muffler too and it was too quiet for me lol. It's pretty good right now, I find the resonator does a very good job eliminating the drone, but when you step on it she still barks. Cheers,

Billy

Yeah like I have always wanted the most power for the quietest sound but with it straight piped, it's so much quieter than I thought it would be.

It is just between the muffler at the end or the resonator.

Is it just mostly going to be the tone that changes between the two or is the Magnaflow going to be a lot quieter?

Also, if you just suggest resonator, which one should I be looking at?

Yeah I do like the Dynomax VT, it just worries me a bit with the moving parts...

The only thing I don't really like about the straight pipe aside from the drone is the inconsistency with the sound. For example, at 2500 rpms, it's at it loudest with a deep low tone. When you get above 3000 rpms, it sounds great but it's actually quieter than when it's at 2500. Would a muffler help with making the sound more consistent. I don't want to make it super quiet. Something that can eliminate most of the drone, doesn't need to be all, and make the sound a bit more consistant would be awesome.

Any recommendations?

Thanks,

Max

Most power will be gained from a larger down pipe. You won't notice a power decrease with high flow mufflers on our cars.

I have a magnaflow muffler, resonator, and high flow cat. Decibel wise its very similar to stock but MUCH deeper. No attention from cops, no riceyness, absolutely no drone. Regular people don't notice I have a full custom exhaust.. which is what I like. The way I see it, who gives a shit what other people hear when you're the one suffering from annoying drone. Especially when you have a girl or people in your car.

Its obviously up to you and it's mostly opinion. You will probably be happy if you just throw a small resonator near the rear.

honestly i miss the way my car sounded with the stock exhaust manifold and stock exhaust

I debated with myself for quite some time when my factory cat failed earlier this year. At first I thought about going OBX turbo back, but there was no stock at the time and I could not wait. So, I sourced an OBX straight flange downpipe, had a custome 3" catless midpipe made, purchased a reducer and some band clamps, cut the swivel joint off the factory exhaust, and just put it together. The difference was, in my opinion, amazing. The car pulls soooo hard, but is only marginally, if at all, louder than stock. It does have a slightly deeper tone. Now, one negative without running the cat is the smell of the exhaust. That alone is making me think of running a 3" high flow cat. Otherwise, I wouldn't change a thing.

Well right now I am still with the stock diameter piping. I don't want to sound like a ricer, and I don't want annoying drone because sure it sounds kinda cool on the outside but anyone in the car goes a bit crazy after a while.

I really like the sound of this exhaust

You'd be amazed at the straight pipe drone improvement with only a cherry bomb positioned in the middle of the car. That said, I found the best option was to simply change diamter a few times. My downpipe is 3", tapers to 2.5" for about 18", flares back out to 3", does this once more, and the last 24" or is 3" again. The waves bouncing around those chambers knocks out ALL of the drone and keeps here amazingly quiet under 3k rpm. At the same time, the thing ROARS when you stomp on it. Not that it makes much difference but this is on my 03 S60 2.4T

I really like the idea of doing that. Like it sounds, from what you have said, perfect for what I'm looking for. Could I achieve this by just putting a glass pack muffler on? It seems like this would have a similiar effect, right?

If so, which glass packs would be best and where should I put it?

I mentioned a "cherry bomb" is the first sentance which is a glass pack. Keep in mind that glass pack "mufflers" will get louder as they age. What you're trying to achieve is resonance chambers which will cancel out a lot of the sound waves that you don't want while keeping flow very high. I suggest that you either use 2 glasspacks with nothing else or one glasspack with a "bulge" like I explained above. 2.5" to 3" (12-18" of that) and then back down to 2.5" works well.
