Installed A Boost Gauge, Help Figuring It Out Please?

Picked up the iPd boost gauge and pod mount. Eventually I'll probably get a wideband A/F meter and oil pressure gauge, then go w/ the 3 pod pillar mount but this will do for now. Looks pretty ghetto, but it functions. I painted it w/ SEM graphite interior paint.

Is this the correct spot to tie in the vacuum? That line its T'd into comes right out of the manifold. Also not sure I'm super confident in the "press fit" vacuum hose fittings on the gauge and the T, but I've never used them either. A lot easier than a compression fitting.

So here's what I have. At an idle I'm showing about -9, and at WOT all I can get is about 6 lbs of boost. This is all knew to me so bear w/ me :). The 6 lbs of boost would explain the hesitation or choking I get at about 2500 RPM, then the boost drops for a bit and picks back up again, but never beyond 6 lbs. The weird thing is I throw an overboost CEL when I floor it.

Does this mean I have a vacuum leak? Or that my turbo is only boosting to 6 lbs? Or potentially both?

That is the same spot I have my boost gauge tee'd into.

At idle (park or neutral) I see 20-22 inhg (vacuum) and I'll hit 12psi max boost - stock tune and auto.

It sounds like you have a pretty giant vacuum leak :) Check your IC to TB pipe at the TB connection, that has always been the cause of my boost leaks

Good news is that a leak like that should be fairly obvious, if you were only a few in hg off, then you'd have to start chasing vacuum lines and stuff. This leak should be easy to find.

I have my tee there too.

You should really just replace all your vaccum lines with silicone (stage 0). Also make sure your wastegate is adjusted, so you don't have any excusses for your tune not running properly. Also maybe consider replacing your TCV with a new OEM or better. I'm running a AC Delco, which you need to make a Bosch to Delco adaptor.

Threadjacking, but why do you guys have to tee it in? Do 99 and up not have a vacuum tree?

No! We are ME7... ;)

Sounds like I have some work to do tonight. First step will be to replace all the vacuum lines. What size (or sizes) will I need so I can call the parts store here and make sure they have what I need? If I remember right, it was 8mm; correct?? Once I have all these replaced, I'll move forward w/ wastegate adjustment after I get through that. I already replaced all the lines that were pcv related.

Just to show how uneducated I am... I had to search out what all this means; TCV, CBV, and wastegate. I knew how turbos power (forced induction), but I've never done anything w/ one to up performance or even diagnose anything turbo related.

Thanks again for all the help!!

must be the tune

Guessing reading and comprehension aren't your best qualities??

I was thinking that or maybe Obama.

Its a 99, so I'm leaning more towards Clinton.

You could replace all the vacuum lines, and that's never a bad idea. However, I would address the larger leak first so you know what is fixed and what isn't. My guess is that it's your intercooler piping... likely on the cold side. Check for rips and tears too in the soft components.

The turbo is likely giving you the over boost warning because it it's trying real hard to overcome the probably sizable leak you have. As a result, you never get pressure beyond a certain point, no matter how hard the turbo is working.

sarcasm lost on this one....

I got that it was sarcasm; just curious what you were trying to say. I've never said my tune was definitely the issue w/ my car. I don't expect you to go over all those different posts in different threads, but I still don't understand your point in saying "must be the tune".
