 audi allroad and low maintenance aren't synonymous at all. My neighbor and good friend works on VAGs all day so I hear a decent amount about them.

The 2.7T is a great motor but routine maintenance requires you to take the front bumper off. The stock K03 turbos like to die, requires removing the motor to replace, and parts aren't any cheaper than Volvo.

The air suspension commonly leak, requiring you to replace the air bags $$$$

Oh, and all VW/Audi's from that time have all sorts of electrical gremlins, which are complicated to troubleshoot and pricey to replace

If you want a relatively reliable DD, an 850 or x70 NA is your best bet.

Man oh man it's like you guys want me to buy the Audi

Stay away from the Audi A6, specifically the 2.8L engine; a friend of mine had a 99 and it was the biggest heap of trash I've ever seen, nothing worked the way it was supposed to. And, as already stated, avoid the Allroad like the plague.

but i think on a P2 once the major bugs are out there shouldn't be to many things to worry about provided you get a good year like 03 or 04.

They all have the same maitenence as P80s. they're essentially the same cars only they now have Can-bus system, cvvt, AWD and shitty auto trans. plus a whole new set of other problems.

I know you'd like to think that because its a newer and more modern looking car it should be clear sailing with only a bit of easy maintenance. Nope.

I'll take my S70 over my XC90 ANY day.

Or even worse, a 2.7 turbo. TURD

Actually, if you want a reliable daily driver with zero maintenance...buy a 2000 Toyota Corolla.

I understand where you guys are coming from and I appriciate it, the audi is out. But i don't want a car like a corolla theres no character there. I understand I will have to do maintenance I am not afraid of that I am just fed up with dealing with all the stuff that is going wrong on my 850. I know a p80 car would be better probably. But I cannot justifiy spending a large amount of money on another 850, and personally I am not a fan of the p80 v/c/xc/s 70's, just not my style. I love the way P2's look and drive, and would like to think they can be reliable. I mean come on guys I'm not expecting a corolla but by the way you make it sound it's like a P2 is equivelent to like an early 90's cadillac... maybe I'm too thick to see it but I can't help but think they aren't THAT bad. I love my 850 as much as anyone else but it is no longer a good daily driver, and I just feel a P2 chassis car unmodified would be. Thanks again,

Billy

A P2 can be very reliable, but the earlier model years and lower end of the price range will be more likely to break stuff.

One of my friends picked up an 04 V70 AWD with ~120k on it the clock for $4000-ish. It was in good shape, the body looked like new and interior was clean black leather. It had new axles, and 4 new tires. Even there, he spent a decent amount of money on "routine maintenance" after buying it. I replaced the PCV system, it needed new pads and rotors, and a bunch of vacuum lines were rotted away.

But stuff like that doesn't worry me. Those are things to be expected in any old car. And I don't consider my price range to be low for P2's, especially not the years I am looking at. You can get P2's here all day for less than $2000 but I am willing to spend more in order to hopefully get a good one. I don't expect a mint car, My parents paid $9,000 for their v70 when they bought it two years ago, from a volvo dealership, and it was seriously MINT. Maintained at that dealer since new. I get that a car like theirs costs that kind of money but I can't see how there aren't any other good ones in my price range these days. Anyway I need a new car now as I am in school and i don't have time to be wrenching on my 850 constantly anymore. So I will probably be buying an xc this weekend, If i find one in good shape. Thanks again everyone,

Billy

I have a 02 S60 AWD, mechanically = PERFECT, body wise= PERFECT!

Doesn't drive = electronic issues!!! Not even the Volvo Dealer can fix'it (and is friend of mine), I bought Vida/Dice and what else etc. In the spring I have to part'it out.

My S70 have 335.000 miles, she drive me to the end of US (Key West) with no prob.

Good luck with whatsoever you choose.

If money is tight, having time or money into any repairs should worry you....you now have a car payment ( likely with higher insurance) to consider. Paying roughly $200 a month as student will be a hit as it is, let alone adding in higher costs to fix an older Volvo or Audi.

I think everyone here that's past college years or with a tight budget can relate with you on wanting the car with more character, but sometimes you just have to practical so you can still live and enjoy life. Getting something like an 02 - 05 Honda Accord will serve you better in reliability and maintenance. Worst off you keep it for a couple of years and then dump it for the car you want later. Good part is they retain good resale and likely you'll recoup most of what you paid for it.

What you want May be newer than the 850, but it is still a 10 + year old, higher mileage Volvo.

I hate to say this because I know they're ugly; but if you're looking for a car to get you through school I'd check out a 2005+ Malibu. Simple, ridiculously boring, but decent power, great mileage and mechanically great cars. Plus they're cheap and fairly easy to fix. And in your price range I know you could find a decent one w/ respectable miles.

I know that doesn't sound fun but while you're in school, planning for your future you just need something that works. There's nothing cheap about a Volvo.
