Should I Be Scared Of An 01?

All I can say is that I bought my 850 N/A when I just finished school and had a load of student debt - it was a smart purchase. It's been fairly bulletproof - I listed the minimal repairs it's had over the almost 3 years and 70,000 KMs.

I've been looking at cars for the past month and my 850 has spoiled me - for a 1997 I have an 8-speaker sound system, side impact airbags, heated seats, power everything, keyless, fog lights, and no traction control...some newer cars don't have all this within a good price point. Not to mention my OBD II scanner can pull and erase codes, I can program key fobs in the car, and almost everything is analog, easy to repair/replace, and cheaper than my father's 2000 S70 was.

I don't know if you have any interest in buying a 4-door because you like the wagons, but if you're interested I'm going to be selling my car fairly soon and I've done almost every big, costly and time consuming repair for a while - t-belt, acc. belt, water pump, serp belt, tensioners, thermostat, rebuilt ABS module, etc...my cost of ownership on this car (not including gas) is around $130 a month factoring in every repair and original purchase price.

It's actually really funny you mention the Malibu because my friend has an 04 Maxx and loves it. I have been tossing around the thought of an older Lexus is300 as well, I would think as a Toyota product is should be alright too eh?

Lexus would probably be ok, still more expensive than a Toyota to repair in terms of parts and labor just because it says Lexus. Good cars though in terms of reliability.

Yeah I thought so too but my friend who worked at a Toyota dealer said they are electrical nightmares. It's a shame because I like them, but I think rwd would be bad in the winter anyway. And thanks for the offer on the p80 but I'm not a big fan of p80 sedans, just personal preference cheers

I've actually never heard that about a Lexus, pretty sure they are decent cars. Audi's are electrical disasters but I don't think a Lexus is. What did your buddy do for Toyota? Is he referring to the accelerator pedal issue they had, where the cars were (supposedly) taking off for no reason?

You could get one and put some 26" wheels on it. And roll out w/ some Tupac (Coolio) blasting through a pair of 15s

Haha BAWS. But no he worked parts and service at a dealer, he said most Lexus and Toyota models are really good but apparently the early 2000 IS300's (what I was interested in) have lots of electric gremlins, I don't think they are drive by wire either. And don't worry lol I know all the gas pedal stuff is bs the same pedal is used in cars from many other company's and the issue is still present, it just doesn't get publicized. And as far as I'm concerned there was an issue, Toyota made it right and that shows the company stands behind their product, I support that. Just wish most of them weren't so darn dreary

Not a honda person, never was never will be. I'm sure I sound like an arse for saying it but I would literally rather walk or ride a bus. Not even joking

They all have the same maitenence as P80s. they're essentially the same cars only they now have Can-bus system, cvvt, AWD and shitty auto trans. plus a whole new set of other problems.

I know you'd like to think that because its a newer and more modern looking car it should be clear sailing with only a bit of easy maintenance. Nope.

I'll take my S70 over my XC90 ANY day.

Or even worse, a 2.7 turbo. TURD

Actually, if you want a reliable daily driver with zero maintenance...buy a 2000 Toyota Corolla.

If you like P2s you should get one, yolo right? I'd rather have a broken Volvo than a running Toyota anyway.

Just stay away from AWD, in your price range (aka higher miles) it'll just bring potential problems. A manual NA would obviously be the most reliable but if you can find a T5m thats cool too, just try to stay away from those pesky autos...
