I Love Headlight Wipers

Just another couple things I've been nitpicking on Adam's old 850...

New motors off of an 850 with 86k, '00 XC headlight arms, and a new check valve for the squirters. Worth the money? Most likely no, never. Looks better than just removing the arms though, I think. Didn't know the 98-00 arms were an upgrade, but they look a little better and have a firmer spring in them.

Replaced the windshield wiper motor and arms with ones off of the 86k car too, at 217k the old one was getting a bit slow, and the original 850 arms were still perfect. (Not bent) I hear the headlight wipers are timed differently so the headlight beams aren't both interrupted at the same time… which hardly makes a difference I'm sure.

The only time these ever really help is when driving in heavy snow/sleet, which rarely happens.

I'm always hesitant to spray my windshield because the headlight wipers may not park correctly and I will have driven around with one retarted wiper sticking straight up..

#volvoproblems

Turn the lights of when using the washers, the headlight ones only come on when the headlights are on (I think, hard to remember if this is Volvos or Audis that do that)

Or just unplug them, it's super easy

You guys know theres a way to fix these motors for free right? I've been meaning to post this but seems appropriate to mention it here. Like the OP, I'm one of those weirdos that prefers my HL wipers to work and think they look better installed. And they actually DO help on long slushy drives to the ski mountain..seriously. I did some investigation on my own on how to fix these and found something else that wasn't mentioned anywhere. Apparently there is a resistor (which will stop the wipers if they are stuck from ice or whatever) which in my case was broken and only allowed the wiper to work about one swipe until it heated up and slowed/stopped the motor. This resistor is unlike anything I've seen before where it appears to be some kind of square magnet with foil tape on each side. All i had to do was pluck it out from between the two metal tabs inside the motor and then simply cross them together. Now my driver side wiper worked perfectly at the same speed as the other. Luckily the passenger side hasn't given me an issue, because I'm pretty sure this is the one that requires you to remove the bumper. As some of you may know the drivers side motor can indeed be removed with small hands and a little maneuvering.

Here is the repair link for Saab HL wipers which are the same style motor. NOTE: In this guide the OP found his actual wiper motor was worn out. In my case I left the motor alone, it was simply a matter of sanding the connections of the metal tabs that are under the red plastic gear. I also had to bend it a little to ensure good contact. You can find a good picture of this on page 3 picture 21 with the green arrow. And as before mentioned I also had to remove that resistor as shown below

Which is why mine are still there, for looks.

This. (I still use mine since they work in this 850, however)

Buuut... my past V70 and S70 both had wiper motors that didn't work, but I kept the headlight wipers on anyways. Imo, it looks silly, especially in the S/V/C70s because of the dips/holes in the bumpers that accommodate for the arms. Even if they're not working, at least it looks original and not cheap. People probably wouldn't even know they're not working most of the time anyways.

If you delete just put those little dear whistlers in the "dips". Well, assuming you live with dear around, haha.

That's creative. That idea works for me. Haha, better than nothing there at all.

 nice work

You are much more dedicated than me - i just unplugged them

Being unemployed helped I think :P

Now the priorities are 1) does it start 2) is it broken 3) is she complaining

Although I did get a nice text recently "This is the quietest 850 in the world"
