98 C70 Sc-900 Prologic Upgrade?

Hi Guys,

I've been looking to upgrade the HU (SC-900) with some aftermarket options but it seems very limited when it comes to retaining the Dolby prologic system and by that the centre speaker.

I love the sound of the Dyna Audio system especially in prologic mode its just the OEM unit is looking very dated and i would like to modernise it.

With some research it appears that only HU units that have long been discontinued support prologic systems (6.1 channel output) especially with digital/Toslink outputs.

I'm looking for a used Alpine IVA-W505 paired with the external decoder/processor Alpine PXA-701.

Any thoughts on this combo? Any other upgrade alternatives? Also if anyone has upgraded their prologic system and retained their central channel would love to hear about your setup and reviews on it.

Upgrade your unit with the SC901. OEM

I had a look at the SC901 but in Australia they are asking for around $300 from the breakers which is insane. I've already purchased the Alpine PXA-701 decoder now looking at the Alpine IVA-W520E HU and Arc Audio 6 channel amp.

Update:

I have retained my dash centre speaker with full pro logic 2, DTS, DD 5.1 processor upgrade.

HU = Alpine iva-502e (second hand)

Optional X 6 CD stacker (second hand)

Optional Bluetooth (second hand)

Optional sound processor (second hand)

All the above was a bundled price for $500 AUD which retails for over $2,500 AUD

I brought a separate 5.1 channel processor pxa-h701 also second hand for $160

Installed the HU and retained the factory V12 amp 4 X 100w using the below cables:

Centre channel wasn't working, opened it up and magnet broken just left rolling around (very common problem), also broke the centre grille using to much force prying it up!

Use this guide, to avoid making the same mistake as i did.

Purchase brand new centre speaker inc tweeter and cradle, had swap the speaker out into the old cradle due to RHD configuration. New speaker has a bolt in the magnet to avoid the detachment of magnet.

Cheapest was from Tasca parts,

Had to cut the green connector, mine had three wires, White (negative -), Blue (+), and ground i believe which i left out. On some dolby models there was only the blue and white cable for the centre channel.

As the factory centre speaker had a separate amp in the dolby amp, i had to buy another amp, it ended being overkill for the centre speaker. It was on special so i did the impulse buy at $90

I was sold on the compactness of the amp, both the processor and the centre amp sit under the passenger seat.

While i was at it, i added a Pioneer 12" sub in a factory ported box

Also on special for $169.

The amp is an AB 2 channel 500w RMS Jaycar Response Amp

Amp was $170

This site came in handy for install.

Wiring amp kit, power and ground distribution blocks where an additional $70.

I also override the handbrake wire by ground the park brake wire to the HU chasis. Also made the HU region free.

Overall very happy with the result, sound quality is amazing over factory even though its sub optimal at the moment haven't had the time to play with cross over, slopes, time delay etc etc.

Hope it helps someone whom is thinking of going this route, you won't be disappointed.
