eXo0us
Hello there, just got my XC90 and after there is no documentation with the car I'm just going through my regular "do every life expanding maintenance you can find" The car 147.000 Miles old. Everything works, everything looks fine. But the transmission is shifting a little harsh when it's cold. I know the 6 speed is not the smoothest transmission at the market I just want to change the fluid. In the same procedure I'm thinking about - installing a bigger transmission cooler. Because this car has just the integrated cooler in the radiator. Has anybody ever done a change on this transmission ? I've seen a couple of posts here at volvospeed that they are opening the upper screw at the gearbox, then disconnect the line to the cooler, start the engine, and shift from park, trough all stages and back, and in the meantime fill 12 quarts of fluid in the transmission. (IPD USA). I'm really no expert in automatic transmission, everybody hast manual in Europe. And nobody changes their fluids ever. The second part is, when I have to disconnect the normal tranny cooler I could install the bigger factory one like this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/03-11-12-13-XC9 ... 2e&vxp=mtr Do I need new hoses to connect the other cooler ? I think so ? Or should I just go for some "universal transmission cooler" ? Should I add the cooler the existing cooler or just replace the existing cooler ? Thanks, Sebastian
TIZIO AKA 1 HND MEC
Watch carefully this: Add as well a oil filter if you want, dedicated transmission radiator will save you from problems.
eXo0us
thank you for the video looks cool. What I don't understand why he is draining 10 quarts through the cooler line ? You could drain 3.3 quarts at the bottom, - fill again - start the car, idle it for a time, drain again trough the bottom. Repeat. Would do the same thing and you don't have to buy the O-Rings and clamps. (40 bucks) In the Video I can not see how he is removing the fluid which is in the radiator. Or Is that we he is saying - that what is using is the low pressure line ? the V8 xc90 has no dipstick... and what I have read is that the 6 speed has problems with overfill. So I will get problems if there is too much in the gearbox. Yeah a dedicated radiator is a good option. But which ? the factory one ? or anyone ? RJB
If you ONLY drain the pan and fill you are mixing OLD fluid with new. Draining all from cooler lets you drail ALL DIRTY fluid in one direction while NEW FLUID is pushing the old fluid out.
kampman
If you ONLY drain the pan and fill you are mixing OLD fluid with new. Draining all from cooler lets you drail ALL DIRTY fluid in one direction while NEW FLUID is pushing the old fluid out. If you drain and fill the transmission 3 or 4 times then the majority of the old fluid has been flushed out. It's not as thorough as flushing from the cooler lines but it's still a valid method for changing the fluid.
