NEU
Ummmm. No! Ain't nothing wrong with mine. And Volvo used them for over a decacade. If you're stupid and don't take care of it it can become garbage, but that will happen to any trans/motor/car...
Mattbchillin
That's good to know. The no service records from previous owner scare me a bit. But I will change the fluid out when I get a chance. Test drive was great, everything felt good, shifted fine. I look forward to getting back into a Volvo again
Keaton85
Pretty normal to not have service records. I've probably only had one or two with records. Who cares anyway as most of us on here go over the whole car anyway.
(n)A-GAME
The AWD versions are more failure prone than the FWD versions. Don't do a full flush but rather a drain-and-fill gradual flush once you get it. 190K on my 00R's and it still shifts fine.
Mattbchillin
After 300 miles, one time from 2nd to 3rd the rpms flew up. 2 other times it seemed around 35-45 mph the tranny was doing something weird. No clunking or banging, no hard shifts. It goes to shop on Monday, some computer upgrade and a tranny flush. Found out the etm was done and everything is solid and there are no leaks. I test drove this car for 30 minutes and didn't experience an issues with the transmission, hopefully it will be ok. I had the 850 for 7 years and knew every little sound and issue it had, I knew what was new and what was old, what repairs were made. Driving and learning a new car is stressful, im listening for any odd noises or issues that the car might have, im wondering what repairs are done, how did the previous owners treat it. I guesse I just have to sit back and enjoy the ride.
Ihatespeedbumps
If you continue to have poor shift quality problems, look into replacing the shift solenoids with the Rostra solenoid kit. I've installed them on many early 5spd autos with great overall success.
sjmcarz
Make sure that the shop does NOT power flush the trans, they'll want to do a series of drain and fills instead. These 5 speed transes are very particular on how it's done, otherwise it can cause more issues with them. You'll also want to reset the fluid counter for the trans, which can only be redone with VIDA. Also, the trans gets refilled via the dipstick tube only, DO NOT remove the large bolt on the top rear of the trans, it holds the anchor for the 3rd gear band and if removed will cause you major headaches. If they remove that bolt, 3rd gear won't engage, and youll need to take the transmission apart to get that band clamp reattached. trans fluid must be drained / filled on these cars, power flushing can do a ton of damage. drain the fluid from underneath, then use a small funnel to put in new fluid through the trans dipstick tube

Mattbchillin
Got it back Monday after the transmission update, runs great. You can really tell the difference after coming to a stop. No issues so far. Bought the trans flush kit from IPd and will be tempting that in a few weekends. One thing im confused about is, do I use the upper trans hose hole for the flush. Other than that the car is great, everything looks good. We are doing the upper engine mount, all new filters, power steering flush, stage 0 stuff. Im ready to start off with a nice clean slate. Keaton85
$25 bucks for a 2-3 dollar hose and gaskets baffles me. Just go to the hardware store and get the hose. 90% of the time you won't need the seals or green clips. Also, you don't even have to mess with a thing (hose wise). Just drain and refill a few times. I usually do it once a week or whenever time permits until the fluid is clean. Never back to back.
