Hesitation When Stopped And In Drive

I just changed my spark plugs to resolve low speed hesitation. It helped. But I am still getting an occassional 'stumble' when in Drive and at a complete stop.

Is that normal for the 2000 S70's engine managment? Or is it a symptom of some other problem? Any suggestions on what to check to resolve?

Thanks!

The ETM job is about $1000. Problem is that when the change is made a software download is needed to get the thing working right. If you have a new TB with the yellow sticker on the front of it, and only 20K miles I don't think your TB is your problem. Item that could cause the problem is the Mass Air Flow meter, also a common failure item.

Is the ETM the same as the Throttle Body?

My thoughts, since the car runs really well other than the occasional stumble, is to change the spark plug wires (original) and figure out what PCV service is appropriate for this car (any resources/hints?). Do you think that may resolve the problem?

Also, any information available on cleaning the ETM/TB? I've heard that it is good preventative maintenance.

Thanks!

The ETM and the Throttle Body are the same animal. On the new cars 1999 to present, Volvo has went to an ETM to replace the older throttle body. The ETM stands for Electronic Throttle Module, it has the throttle plate, a computer, and the position sensors all built into the ETM.

Your car doesn't have Spark Plug Wires, you have coil packs, one on top of each spark plug, held in place by a 10mm bolt.

Cleaning of the throttle body in my opinion would be good every 20-25K or so. It's a drawn out procedure because the ETM is located under the intake manifold now and it's a bugger to get at. I'll shoot some pics and post it when I get the chance.

Thank you!

It's a load off my mind to hear that the ETM and TB are the same part-- since that was changed by the dealer 20K miles ago. It sounds like the TB cleaning is due so any guidance you provide will be much appreciated!

Can you also point me in the direction of any resources that would help me clean the PCV system on the same car? It seems that it would be different from the system described in the Bay 13 area ('Replacing the Flame Trap').

You are correct the PCV on your car is different, and I'll make sure I cover it with the ETM cleaning, it's all in the same place kind of. You have what is called the PCV nipple, a 17mm banjo bolt that should be taken out and cleaned and the hoses going to it cleaned as well. Not too bad if the ETM is removed.
