Turbo Oil Return Line Installation

Went to remove the turbo oil return line and finally got it out. This is on an AWD V70 R, so the bolts are harder to access than if this were a FWD model.

The 5mm allen head bolts that hold the line to the turbo were a major challenge to remove. I got them broken loose fairly easily, but I could not get my big hands in there to turn them by hand.

Instead I had to use the ratchet, which was heavy and awkward. The bolts were loose enough so that the ratchet would not click, so I had to turn the bolt a little, remove the ratchet, manually make it click once, get the ratchet back into place, turn the bolt, etc., etc. It took forever.

I tried using ratchet extensions and flex joints, but gravity kept interfering and I could never get the tool into the bolts. I am thinking of going to the parts store to find some stiffer flex joints.

Now I am faced with the reinstall and I do not know how I am going to get the bolts started. Once in, I can do the ratchet thing, but getting them in looks like it is going to be a major challenge.

Any advice is apprecited.

Use of a magnet?

Allen bolts should fit on the end of an allen socket pretty easily. I know it's hard with an extension, but it's probably your best bet to try and feed them on with an allen socket and extension.

Or find someone with small hands.

McGiever always uses tape in situations like this, scoth tape may make your u-joints more stiff....  Also, a miror and a friend may help to create a line of sight.  If you can see the bolts, you will have better luck.

BE PATIENT!!

McGyver would have been able to built a combustion engine out of a toothpick, a paperclip and a piece of gum with the help of only a swiss army knife.

I have been defeated.

I can not get that oil return line back in. I tried for several hours and it just is not happening. That AWD unit is just to big and I cannot see the hole and I can not get the allen heads bolts angled so that they will go into thier holes.

I am making arrangements to have the car towed to the local Volvo dealer.

I have rebuilt engines without issue and done most of the maintenance on my cars only to get my butt whipped by an oil return line. Go figure.

Rich,

Thanks for all your information on this website. Since I'm preparing to change the gaskets on my 98 V70XC turbo oil return line, could you post some tips on how to successfully complete the job? Also, from what I have read here, it appears that the line will be empty when you remove it, so there won't be dripping oil all over?

Thanks,

Ted
