Weird Starter Issue

Recommended Posts

So... figured I'd post this here just in case anyone felt like theorizing...

I had parked my sedan for awhile and been driving my R, went to start the sedan to drive it around a bit and it did absolutely nothing. Had a charged battery but no signal to the starter. Tried another relay. Started it 'manually' with the key in position two and tapping the signal pin on the starter straight to the batt+. Drove it into the shop, tore into the relay box, test lighting everything and it seemed fine, relay was getting power, positive signal from the ignition, negative signal from the clutch switch, everything seemed fine. Tested the relays, they're both good. Put it back together, without fixing anything, and it's been working fine ever since.

It kinda bothers me that it seemed to simply not be willing to start without being able to find something wrong with it that would cause that.

Refresh my memory, is the signal wire to the starter bolted on or does it use a spade or slide on connector like the early P2's? I do know that the early P2's with the spade/slide on connector gets corodded, once you remove it and put it back on it makes better contact and works.

Immobilizer codes stored? I'm thinking a bad key or antenna ring and pins.

Nope, and with the Denso ECM it will crank but not fire due to no spark with an immobilizer issue. I'm 100% sure it's not that.

It's the slide on type, I tried that before I pulled the relay, didn't make a difference. I even put a test light on it and had one of our wash guys turn the key, didn't do anything. It really acted like a bad relay with both relays I tried until I started it without the relay and started checking stuff. I wish I had done more testing without pulling it in, while it had the symptom.
