T5WagonMaster
Hey Guys, Older guy working for a restoration specialty company (Eastwood) and first got into 850's when getting cars for our kids. These things are like tanks! Now proud owner of 4 Volvos, '05 XC90, '98 S70 GLT; '98 S70 Base and my toy, '98 V70 T5 that I rescued from a scrap heap. In early February, I put her in the garage with what I'm sure was a really bad PCV issue and have been working on it off and on since then, mostly out in the driveway. I finally got it all back together 5 days ago and found she won't run. The car starts fine but won't keep running. I have spark--I have fuel pressure at the rail (replaced injectors with rebuilt original whites also). Fuel pump relay seems to be fine. I note that I have a black stain on the concrete under the tailpipe as I've had it running but it won't idle--I have to stay on the accelerator. So, it's been basically open to the elements for about a month with only rags stuffed in the ports. What is the problem? Is the fuel filled with water from all the condensation? I found and replaced two more broken vacuum lines today, one to the wastegate, the other to the bottom of the airbox by the MAF. Other notable information: Battery remained in the car the entire time with positive cable attached, ground detached. The battery was dead when I first hooked back up in an attempt to start after completing job. There is a faint smell of gasoline and what smells like rubber burning in the engine compartment after I fire it up and stay on the accelerator for a minute. I do not see any leaking around the tops or bottoms of the injectors. When I do get it running, I have to feather the accelerator to keep it running...can't even keep it at even pressure and maintain RPM's. And lastly, it sounds a bit like backfiring as I do that but it is coming from the engine bay. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. T5WagonMaster. Keaton85
You probably have the metal bracket stuck between the intake and the block. Creating a major vacuum leak. Look right behind the throttle body and see if the metal is between the intake and head.
T5WagonMaster
Thanks Keaton85. That must be it...I've checked everything else and changed nearly all the other vacuum lines. Guess I'll be rippin' in to this today. I wonder if I can just take that bracket out of there--looks like it really doesn't do much except get in the way. T5WagonMaster
Good call Keaton85. Took it all apart this afternoon and removed that bracket completely. Wife held the vacuum line out of the way while I tightened up the intake. Just got done putting it all back together and the T5 roared back to life! Thank you so much for your help!
