Camshaft Base Setting

I realize this topic has been beaten to death but I have one simple question.

(did this last year when I installed na cams)

With the dist/cps end notches lined up parallel with the block seam, I placed both cam gears at 0 degrees via ipd tool, then installed the timing belt. Is this the absolute base setting I should use to adjust the cams to my liking?

Should I have had the exhaust gear at 4 degrees advanced and intake at 0, and then installed the timing belt? I remember someone mentioning the stock setting is 4exh advance and 0int, which is what is confusing me. Been trying to fix my slow boost onset and max 15psi problem for a while.

They should be separated by an extra four degrees for the NA cams. However, you should have them zeroed upon installation of the belt. Then you adjust the 4 degrees out and go from there. As long as the notches on the cam gears line up where they are supposed to in the cover you should be fine pulling 4 degrees from the intake or advancing the exhaust 4 degrees, or meet in the middle with +2 exh, -2int.

Great! that's what I wanted to hear. I'm aware of the 4 degree spread, I just wanted to confirm that while both cam slots are parallel, the gears should be at 0/0 using the tool, and then the belt installed.

This way the inaccurate plastic cover notches don't really have to be relied on.
