98XCFxRUpR
New battery. Getting 12.5+ volts on green ignition wire at starter when key turned. Getting 12.5+ volts on red cable at starter. Dash lights and headlights come on in key pos II headlights turn off in key pow III Took starter out and can make the motor and solenoid function by applying 12v to the terminals as described in several online starter troubleshooting guides. What do I do next. I'm at a loss. Thanks, chris
Ihatespeedbumps
Any symptoms before any of this happened? Weak starters can often spin when removed from the engine, but lack the power to actually turn it over. Just to cover all our bases, the engine can be turned over by hand? 98XCFxRUpR
I'm not sure I follow. How can I turn it over by hand? Ill try almost anything at this point. When I had the starter out I bench tested it with a weak spare battery (11.5v) and it still worked as it should... I re checked all I did so far plus I took apart the pnp and cleaned the contacts.it looked remarkably good for 200k miles compared to my 98 sc. Maybe it was not original. I just bought this car. Anyway, this time checking voltages I cannot get voltage on the green ignition wire to the starter. Maybe I misread it before. This is why I checked the pnp. Without a wiring diagram I don't know what other checks happen for ignition. Pnp, ignition switch, but what else? Ive swapped "j" relays with no luck. What else could be in the way? Piston Slapper
I recently had some trouble starting my 99 NA, tried multiple good relays and it wouldn't start but when I pulled the relay and put batt+ straight to the line to the starter (with the key in the run position) it started right up, was the weirdest thing. But, since you've got power on the signal wire... did you check the ground?
98XCFxRUpR
Thanks. I will try that. It turns out I didn't have power on the signal (green) wire. I've rechecked and I don't see any voltage when the key is turned to the start position. Something is interfering. I downloaded some wiring diagrams and am studying them now. So far they don't tell me much. I'm looking for the other things that I can disable to allow that voltage through to the green wire. -Chris

That will put batt+ straight to the starter's trigger line and start the car. Your issue may be as simple as that relay itself. While you're there you can check that wire for continuity easily. 98XCFxRUpR
Well, it turned out to be the ignition switch. All is well despite being a frustrating 4 days. Not sure why it gave out after parting the transmission... Thanks for the advice. I'm sure it steered me to this conclusion. Chris
