Replace Pcv?

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

Wondering what the consensus is on PCV replacement in the '99- cars. My '00 S70 AWD has 175k on it, but still pulls a good vacuum on the Volvo pressure gauge. I know by mileage it should have been done by now, but seems to be okay yet. I have some oil in the turbo pipes, but I know some is normal. Thoughts?

For what it's worth, I have been running Syntec and changing every 5k since 48k miles when I brought her home.

Other question is, on the '99- cars, do you guys usually replace the hose from the trap to the PTC, or is it not as problematic on these cars (appears to be metal and not plastic)? I know the banjo fittings plug up, but would the system still pull a good vacuum if it was?

Sorry for the newbie questions, thanks in advance

On the 99+, they do not tend to have the same issues due to the shorter vacuum hose and metal main pipe that goes to the PTC. That's not to say that they can't get dirty!

The only concern I would have is the drain, which you can check by putting a solvent down the top hose. The next time you change your oil, add kerosene or any other rubber safe solvent down that hose, with the drain plug removed. If the stuff comes running out, you know the drain is not clogged. Don't put to much in at house because it can easily fill the oil trap and come out the big hole on the side and make it look like it's draining.

Also, that OCI is very short unless that's all you drive in a year.

Since I don't think you plan on getting rid of your car anytime soon, I'd replace it for peace of mind.

I redid the PCV system on my R right after I picked it up with 149k on the clock. No idea what kind of oil had been used in the past, but judging from what I found it wasn't good.
