Justin R32
This is my first MOD on the SR. Solves my very annoying problem of where I can put my phone and see it. Requirements: No visible ugly mounts on the car Phone must go from pocket to mount with no need for anything Must be visible in landscape mode Must be virtually free Must be awesome Removed center vent and cut away this section: Added some rare earth magnets with epoxy: Magnets: For now all I had thin enough was razor blades. I grinded the edges smooth and put tape between phone and blades: BOOM! http://youtu.be/91PIsmm53PQ
BrickCity242
Pretty cool idea but earth magnets are pretty strong aren't they? Think there might be a problem long term with the magnets and the phone internal/external drive space?
Justin R32
Nah... It'll be fine. Magnetic field on the outside of the razor blades isn't too great. Just enough to kept he phone in place. The iPhone 5s is pretty light weight, doesn't take much.
JOHN_CENA
this is a great idea, I gotta do this to the VR. Where did you get the magnets from?
Justin R32
Someone from Facilities at work gave them to me. It looks like HomeDepot sells some neodymium magnets though. The ones I have are dime sized stacked 4-5 high maybe. I did a good bit of research on the effects of magnets on mobile phones and the consensus was that magnets of this size can't harm a phone. Only mess with a physical compass within the iPhone. I haven't had any issues with GPS tracking or anything though. I drive a fairly bumpy road in sport mode and it hasn't budged. The base is actually resting on the top of the radio unit.
Timbo Slice
How strong does it hold? I'd be afraid that every time I hit a relatively large bump it'll come crashing down.

Timbo Slice
My bad, I skimmed the writeup.
Justin R32
I swapped the razor blades out with the bottom of a metal chocolate coffee bean tin from Trader Joe's. The magnetic pull is a little less, but still PLENTY to hold the phone up there. Plus is looks better and people wont' think I'm trying to smuggle razor blades.
