M56 Input Shaft Length. Mating To A Single Or Dual Mass

Recommended Posts

#1

Is the input shaft length any different for a M56 that was used on a Dual Mass compared to a Single Mass? I have a single mass flywheel and am looking at a 2004 M56 that uses an internal slave and a dual mass flywheel. Will it work?

Converting from an external to internal slave. What parts are needed for the slave?

1. Slave

2. Two bolts for the slave

3. splitter/bleeder

4. rubber bell housing seal

5. The real question, do I need to replace my line to the master or are there adapters that can be used to connect to the splitter/bleeder?

#1. I don't think the shaft is any longer, but it's certainly fatter with a different spline count. You will need to source the appropriate clutch disc or have one custom made. I think there was some discussion of a ford one that works. I'm sure someone will link the info.

#2 The line certainly has a much different shape. Also, the external slave has a threaded fitting so I don't believe they are compatible. I can get pics of the external slave connection when I get home.

The clutch line is definitley different. Input shaft length is the same for all years of m56h afaik but 2002(or 2003?) and up transmissions use a bigger input shaft with a different spline count.

From what I understand you will have to use a clutch and PP from a p1/p2 car which won't work with a single mass flywheel. I think your only option to use a 2002+ trans with a single mass flywheel is buy the big $$ kalmar union setup.

Did you break the trans that is in your car or...? If you need an external slave trans I have a good one I need to sell.

I need to replace my trans and want to go with the gear ratio of the M56LK. With the spline count different cant I just purchase a different clutch disk? Why would I need to replace the PP? Its a 707 you know.

You could use a 2004+ R friction with a single mass setup. Check the splines first because there were 3 versions. 21, 23 and 26 mm shaft. R uses 26 and I'm pretty positive the 2004 M56 does so too.

To use the internal slave best would be to replace the whole pressure line, including master cylinder, with X70 type for internal slave. This way you could use all the quick connects used in that type of line.

I still have the clutch disk that I got from alex, which is the larger dia, and diff spline count. I have the receipt for it somewhere for a part #. No need to use a diff PP. I had the set up in the car for a little while and it all worked fine. Does your trans case have the external slave mount?

Since the center part of the clutch is larger , the flywheel had top be ground down.

^the newer version of that clutch doesn't require maching the flywheel. It is Sachs part #SD693 - not sure if it'll hold at OPs power levels though.
