My Volvo 850R Exhaust Mod

Recommended Posts

Hi there,

I thought I'd share my latest modification to the car with you.

I modified my suitcase muffler for better sound but first and foremost reduced back pressure. Car already has a 3" 100cell Ferrita DP.

Parts required:

1x perforated 2,5" pipe, about 25cm / 10 inches

2x 60° angled pipe, 2,5"

What I did is (with the help of my mechanic):

- cut open the suitcase from the top

- remove all internals

- cut angled pieces and perforated pipe to fit

- welded everything together outside the suitcase

- welded the new pipe section into the suitcase

- filled the suitcase with muffler "wool" type material, 700°C max temp. Should be fine, thats what we had lying around anyway.

- closed suitcase again, back on car and enjoy new sound.

Sound is deeper now, similar to the Simons mufflers but still sounds truly 850 like, just somewhat louder. No drone at cruising speeds, quite loud under high load. Just as it should be.

I might add another muffler to reduce overall noise level for German city use ;) but let's see.

So far, I am very happy with it. Car feels more alive, revs up really nicely, definitely a feelable performance increase. Should also help turbo temperatures quite a bit.

Below the pics of the modification. Total cost about 50€ in materials and 0€ labour because my mechanic is my friend ;).

In between there is a pic of my 320mm Police brake which got new pads and rotors (from P26).

Cheers
Christoph

I had considered doing the same; I like free breathing and I also like quiet enough for daily driving, road trips, the radio, and conversations in the car.. :)

for anybody curious, here's an internal shot of stock:

Hi Matt,

thanks for chiming in and contributing the picture.

I am still very happy with the exhaust, it is quiet enough for road trips etc, especially with the windows up. With windows down you hear it a bit more but it is never anywhere near noise levels that would disturb conversation or listening to the radio in the car. On the outside it is - subjectively - a bit quieter than the Simons catbacks. But still a bit loud for a German city. But who is going to pull over a 20 year old Volvo, right?

The only people to pull someone over are the police. They won't, at least not for noise.

And the regular TÜV check is due in 1,5 years and that can always be managed somehow;).

Frage: Who is going to pull over a 20 year old Volvo, right?

Antwort: Herr und Frau Tüf. :)
