Higher Capacity Oil Pump

I had this in my build thread but nobody is responding so I am pulling it out.

I ran across this description of the different Oil Pumps. Is there a physical/visual way to tell which pump is which?

The below is talking about the B5234T Engine:

The high power output has placed greater demands on the engine lubricating system and cooling. The following have been changed in comparison to the other 5-cylinder engines:
-The oil pump capacity has been increased by a wider pump wheel and a modified profile.
-The relief valve has a more rigid spring and opens at 6 bars of pressure (B5254's opens at 5 bar).

I want to make sure I am running the higher capacity pump but unfortunately I dont know what I grabbed when I assembled the car. Does anyone have access to these two pumps and can say whether they are visually different from the outside casting?

Could just be marketing hype, if they pulled it from Volvo literature.

The later RN pump is a different design - I took one apart & decided to use my older pump as I had read that new pumps have been prone to failure (pretty sure it was on the UK forums, don't recall reading that over here).

Based on those comments I am guessing that the ring inside the pump is larger in diameter and thickness over the N/A model. It would be great if someone has an N/A pump and could take it apart and take some measurements. I have two pumps in the garage but I think they are both turbos (well one is for sure since its still on the block). I just need a way to know which is which. The numbers on the outside of the pump do not cross reference to anything.

Wait - you are saying you may have used an NA pump? I don't think there is any difference, based on the catalog listing.

VIDA shows different part number for oil pump on the same year car. I just used 2000 S70 T5 vs S70 NA as an example, and the part numbers are definitely different. Hussein, I'll let you look it up for N engines before '99 when you get VIDA!

LOL. I used '04 V70, didn't specify NA/Turbo, catalog doesn't differentiate....

To add another facet to this: the 6 cyl engine's oil pump has a larger volumetric displacement; more flow at a given RPM. I don't know much about mechanical compatibility; I had always assumed they would be interchangeable.

None turbo 6-cylinder engines as well? I have a B6294S I have lying around that I might be able to pull the oil pump from and take some measurements.

Took apart 2 pumps that I had at the shop. Top pump gears are from a 98 S70 B5244t , the bottom pump gears are from a 05 S60 B5254t. The

earlier 98 pump took 141 ml of fluid to fill the spaces between the gears and the later pump took 85 ml of fluid to fill the space between the gears.

Just an observation.
