98 Vw Beetle..opinions?

I'm going to look at this thing tomorrow. 1998, 2.0 gas with 188k. It's super clean, the guy wants $1800 as the passenger door won't open. It will be for my daughter, Getting her a Volvo isn't going to happen, there's none left around these parts that aren't completely used up.

I know nothing about them, being that it's almost 10pm I can't dedicate hours to browsing forums.

What do I need to look out for on these things? I know 98 was the first year and the interiors seem to be janky but I'm only concerned about reliability. Luckily there's always a few of them at the JY so I can add it to my list of cars to get. A 16-year old girl will be driving it so it may get wrecked in two months, if not I'd like it to be around for a few years.

Being around the block with the Volvos I don't mind swapping a t-belt or anything like that as long as it isn't insanely difficult. I don't want to spend hours shopping for parts either, I just want to get it, go through it and have it run without me having to dick with it all the time.

First of all,

its for his daughter.

Therefore, gay would have been a Subaru Forester.

Matt, It's a 2.0 Golf in a bubbly body.

It's of average euro reliability and typically german quirks.

It'll be ok.. It's not a honda but it's got "personality" and she's a chick so thats all that matters

The price may be right on this one. I can take $1200 with me, maybe the guy's broke and he takes it. After reading up it looks like most of the maintenance is pretty straightforward.

LOL. Gay would be if I put a set of Ronal Bears on it and cruised around parks at dusk. No way would I be driving it.

I want to -1 for that but wont.

I don't know how it is where you live, but when I see a woman driving a subaru around here there's a 50/50 chance her and I have the same haircut and wear the same jeans...I don't have long hair either.

Is she driving it home? If not, you are driving it buddy.

They seem to be decent cars. Not anything I would buy for myself, but for your daughter it should be a good first car. The girls love those things it seems. Does it have the flower vase?

My wife will drive it home. Unfortunately I will have to test drive it. She's told me before that she doesn't really care for them, but I'm paying for it so it isn't her choice. I should get her an old rusty Neon or Focus, but I haven't been a dick much lately. I've been limiting my contact with the general public so I've been in a good mood.

She wanted a truck until I made her drive mine regularly. She does like my old work truck because it's a regular cab/short bed but it's too shitty on gas, otherwise she could drive that.

all I read is VW beetle... which is what my brother drives...he's gay...like actually gay

wait, how gay?

Matt, they are pretty on par with the rest of the german econocrew... Like Mike said, it's pretty average with quirkiness but definitely doable. it says something that a fair bit of them are still on the road. I'd say it's fair to assume the reason there aren't more on the road is because who's behind the wheel.

Wheel that B!tch down here Matt and we'll go get some Zimas.

Maybe see a play or 2

LOL.

I went and checked it out today.

As soon as I opened the door it had this bad smell. Think bad feminine hygiene and stale Newports. I shit you not, the car smelled like a slutty chick that smokes Newports. Two distinct smells that can't be duplicated and they were both there.

The car is a piece of shit, I passed. I scanned it and found 3 airbag codes that DID erase, only two readiness monitors were set, the rest were all fails, it has ABS issues beyond the module, loud as hell and smells like burning oil. Then a SAS code, tow 02 codes, a misfire and some other random stuff. The guy selling it thinks it's a gem, he seemed to think all of that stuff doesn't matter.
