Tom
I'm curious about what sort of damage people have seen when a timing belt breaks and valves run into pistons on the 850 / S70 5-cylinder engine. Is it limited to bent valves and gouged pistons, or have people seen nastier things like:A gouge in the headA gouge in the cylnder wallA damaged valve seat or vlave guideA bent connecting rodA damaged crankshaft journalAny experience on this?Tom
Bay13
Every head job that I have done at the dealer because of the T-belt breaking, has been a head job only, the valves are bent and the valve guides are messed up.
Guest Guest
Thanks Rich - So you just replace the damaged valves and guides, reuse the head and leave all pistons alone?Tom
Bay13
Thats what will fix it. Hope the machine shop you are using can correctly remove the valve guides and install them.
sad-day
have the head rebuilt. replace the damage valves and valves guide and seal.as for damage, the piston might get a little gouge in them, a fine sanding will take care of that.i did this in early january and the car is running great.also get a good estimate from the machine shop. i payed $1200 to rebuilt a used head. they pressure tested the head, changed 3 valves guides and replaced all the valves seals that i provided. the head was resulface and every measurement was check.
