Im looking at buying a 98 C70 5-speed saffron in color, 204k miles.

The seller is the second owner and has had it since 30k miles. Currently recent timing belt, struts, pcv done last year, new heater core, a/c & heat works, IPD exhaust, never wrecked, no rust, all electrical works, seller has most records. It has a slight leak at the oil return for the turbo, and needs tires is the only immediate issues. Parking brake isn't working. Still on original clutch, but, doesn't slip right now. Drivers seat leather is cracked.

What is a fair price for this car ? Ive read they are kinda rare, any known issues ?

I feel 2500 is fair price most the cars I see still are rolling around on original struts and clogged PVC and they are asking 2500 if it has good service history I feel that is worth more than anything you can buy a car like my brother did had 130k on it but needed timing belt full suspension PVC it was a one owner but owner didn't believe in doing service other than oil changes it is hard to find cars that even do the pcv box.

On looks alone I'd say it's worth it..Looks like previous owner didn't dog it plus he owned it a long time which is good. Problem is you will need a clutch like right now and your looking at around $1000 for that so hope you have some money left over after you buy it. the c70's seem to cost more new that the sedans so it is a more expensive car too.

A P80 C70 (i.e. first generation) coupe with manual transmission is 1 of 603 built worldwide between 1997 and 2004 and 1 of 135 in North America. The saffron pearl metallic was only available in North America for the first year, 1998, as one of the two press introductory colors. Most of these were sent to dealerships as show pieces.

The owner is offering it at $2500 and that's not a bad price for the apparent condition of the exterior and interior of the car. The saffron make it worth a little more than the $2000 price it would be worth otherwise. But I would still try to negotiate it lower. In general C70s do not hold their value very well when compared to the S or V70 in similar condition.

Beware that owning a C70 is not a rational relationship and requires the expectation that you're willing to deal with the problems that are peculiar to this model.

Windows

  1. Windows leak air because they're not aligned properly and are troublesome to align given the design
  2. Window regulators fail and then it's a nightmare to replace them
  3. The sheaves for the window regulator system are plastic and break and then your window is stuck down unless you dismantle the entire door in order to replace them with proper metal sheaves

Uncommon Parts

Remind yourself that you're dealing with a low volume vehicle, ~1200 per year during the 5 year production were delivered to the US. That means parts are scarce for the uncommon components that aren't shared with the rest of the P80 platform such as fenders, bumpers, trunk lids, seats, center consoles, etc.

Hand-built cars

If you're looking at a 1998 model then realize you're considering a largely hand-built car. It had a low-volume production line originally co-managed by TWR and Volvo and the assembly process evolved over the initial first year's run.

Thanks for all the help everyone. I went ahead and bought it today :). It needs tires, rotors are warped and needs brake pads. The drivers seat needs redone, but still comfortable. The engine and trans runs and shifts great, all the electrical works. I have to fix the pass. side brake light and turn signal, the PO put a new bulb in it and still not working. The clutch didn't slip at all, I don't drive my cars hard anyways, but, ill def plan on replacing it soon. I have a friend that owns a indie Volvo shop and would help me get it done so thatll save me a few bucks. Again.. thank you for everyone's help

Burn E.. thank you for the info on the car. I was wondering about the rarity of the car. The PO replaced the drivers side window motor/regulator with a OEM one so hopefully itll hold up and yes I noticed the window not sealing correctly driving down the highway on the way home. I rolled the window down and back up and it sealed thankfully.

Good luck with it Phil and enjoy bringing it back to a clean state. They're wonderful cars to drive and the color always leads to conversations with people wherever I go.
