Gas Smell At Rear Right Wheel (Not Inside Cabin)

Recommended Posts

*Gas smell, not small

Relevant info:

* March 2009 - Gas tank replaced per recall, entire tank was replaced by dealership.

* January 2014 - Fuel pump replaced (BOSCH), replaced fuel pump rubber gasket as well, no issues.

* November 2014 - Smell of fuel behind right rear wheel (between wheel arch and tire).

No visible leaks, no smell inside of cabin. Took off fuel pump cover and drove around, again no smell inside. Put my nose directly to the fuel pump and fitting, no smell. Strong smell outside.

Could it be the fuel filler tube/pipe? I read that the gaskets and seals rot out. Car has over 200K on it.

Found this thread and it appears to have a lot of useful information: '?do=embed' frameborder='0' data-embedContent>>

I'll call the dealership that did the gas tank recall job to see if they can provide an itemized list of all that they changed. Don't want to replace things that are likely not the culprit.

I just went thru this on my 97. It was the short section of flex hose that connects to what I believe is the roll over valve. You will need to crawl under there as it's kind of hidden by the fuel filter. A quick run to napa for some hose and about 2 bucks later, smell was gone.

Next time you get gas look under the right rear wheel at hose 23 above and see if its dripping fuel. Had the issue on my 97 and just bought a new hose from the dealer. If it is indeed that hose then there is a thread on MVS that was great help in replacing that particular hose.

The tank will need to be lowered for that hose but not removed entirely.

Did what you suggested and did not see any dripping fuel. Looking at the hoses above the tank, they look fairly new (a good black color with not much dirt) which makes me assume they were changed along with the tank during the recall job. Still waiting for an itemized list of the hoses they changed so that I'm not changing new hoses.

Still having a hard time determining exactly where it is coming from since there are no signs of leaks. Perhaps it's the filler tube?

Here's another symptom: My idle has been a bit rough, making me feel it's a vacuum leak (new MAF, all-new PCV, plugs, wires, cap, rotor, etc within the past 2 months). I read that some of the vent hoses on the tank can cause a vac leak if they are cracked.

Will check this out, thank you!

I think this is the problem. Checked under the car and the flex hose going from the tank to the valve is broken off and missing 2" worth of it. The other end of the valve has the hose still attached but is clearly cracked. About to replace it and see if that solves it.

I think that fixed it. Replaced the rubber hoses with silicon vac line (6.3mm ID). The hard line ends were a tight squeeze, but I was able to get them on nice and snug. So far so good! Thank you for the advise.
