Very Slow Crank, No Start.

Temp dropped below 30 degrees the past 2 weeks, and about a week ago it wouldn't start. The starter seemed to be cranking very slow, and eventually stopped turning over completely. Attempted another start and same thing happened.

Finally got a chance to diagnose the issue today, and I noticed the car was completely dead. Seems like something drained my 2 month old battery in a week. I popped in a brand new working battery from my 850, and was surprised to find that it still cranks slow and will not start.

With my brothers help I eventually got the car to start while tapping the starter. It took us about a minute of cranking, and stumbled to life. Let the car warm up and parked it in my driveway. After that the car restarted flawlessly.

Can a bad starter drain the battery? I don't want to spend $170 on a bosch if it could be something far more likely. I believe this has nothing to do with fuel/spark as the car idled and drove flawlessly once started.

Check the resistance (voltage drop) in the cables from the battery to alternator to starter.

Anything more than a 0.1 volt drop is considered excessive and means the cable should be replaced.

This is a common issue on 99/00 cars, however it typically manifests itself in the B+ cable first and can cause all sorts of strange issues.

Get the battery load tested. Autozone, Napa, Pepboys and other places will test it for ya for free in hopes of selling you a new battery. Also check for voltage drop like Andyb5 said. that could reveal the issue or indicate a second problem and that one being common too. Cold weather alerts us to all kinds of shit that can happen when your dealing with dated stuff.

In addition regarding your question about a bad starter draining a battery. You can access your battery fuse and put a meter on it with the key off to see if you have a parasitic drain on the circuit. I would check all that shit.Glad to hear ya took my advice about tapping on the starter. That test works on fuel pumps, too except on the fuel pump you bang on the tank with a dead blow or rubber hammer and have someone put their ear next to the filling tube to hear if the pump starts humming. Thats the redneck way to diagnose a bad fuel pump and can also get ya out of a jam.

I very highly doubt it's the battery('s). One brand new, one 2 months old. Plus, late last night the car cranked perfect and I drove it for a while. Ever since I bought it I've had that dipping idle problem when coming to a stop. Last night, the car almost stalled.

When I get the chance, I'll check battery cables, battery drain (where is battery fuse?), and probably clean the IAC. Might bring my starter to pep boys for a test this weekend (although it might not tell me anything since the problem is intermittent), and maybe get a new one.

I guess this car is used to shitty florida weather lol. Thanks guys.
