Ordered the turbo today: EFR 7064 T3 WG 0.83 a/r. The price was increased from 1350€ to 1870€ due to the bad conversion rate from USD to € and because BW apparently raised their prices, too.

But I managed to get one off ebay from the same - very reputable - vendor for 1350€.

Today we will work a bit more on the engine and check if the new piston is in spec. It better be ;)

Interesting turbo. I assume you are going with the .83 A/R exhaust housing? Are you keeping the supplied recirculation valve?

The compressor map is extremely tall for how little the turbo flows, I haven't really seen a turbo map like it before. I guess this maps gives a good idea of what affect extended tips and an increased inducer height on a 6+6 compressor wheel can have. It looks very equivalent to a 20G, albeit a modernized version.

Excited to hear how your spool up is with the gamma-TI wheel!

Thanks Aaron.

I went with the .83 A/R like stated but not because I made an educated decision to go for that one but rather because there is no other version for the T3 flange turbo.

My plan is to run it in its stock configuration and see how I like it. I will add the speed sensor, though, to give me an idea where in the compressor map I am. Should be useful for tuning and it's a nice gimmick after all ;).

I know one guy from Austria who ran it and he says it spools up quicker than his K24. He calls it a very "lively" turbo. But I haven't experienced it myself. Really looking forward to it.

Hi, good hint with the pistons.

Found out today.... ;)

Anyway, pistons are 1.6mm too long for 143mm rods so I ordered 141.4mm SPM rods. So, no China stuff this time round.

If I would do it again, I'd probably do it differently from the start.

7670 is a very nice Turbo as well but I guess too big for my power goals. ;)

And to be sure what we ultimately end up with, we will measure the exact volume of the combustion chamber to know 100% what kind of compression we have etc.

Anyway, enough engine stuff for today ;)

Cheers

Chris

Hm.. To my knowledge SPM is Chinese stuff..

Probably, at least the rods might be.

If my estimation is correct, I might end up with a compression ratio of 9.3:1. We will see what the actual result will be and if needed machine the pistons a little bit.

What is the compressed thickness of the MLS S60R head gasket?

I wouldnt mind a higher compression than 8,5:1 and from what I read people have good success with it Hussein e.g.). I plan to run E85 and 102 Euro octane fuel anyway.

I would go with the S60R pistons, we´ve tested them up to 600hp without any problems, right comp height as well. You can shave off the block to reach the comp ratio you´re looking for and make the block stronger. You can also buy Wiseco pistons to a lower price than the SPM´s, they have them in two different comp ratios. Both alternatives are better than SPM, not trying to be mean, just help out.

Don't worry, I understand what you're saying.

Thing is though:

- S60R pistons are 240€ each without even rings and stuff

- Wiseco are nice and all but my bore is now exactly what it has to be for the SPM and the rings that come with Wiseco have a bad reputation over here. I can't say if it is true or not but that seems to be the "German consensus" ;).

All this made me go for SPM and others over here have successfully used that stuff, too.

For another engine I might do things differently but for this one I will see how it goes.

Really appreciate everybody's feedback though. Keep it coming ;).

I always get rings and pins in the S60R piston box. We´ve used Wiseco pistons for many years now and never any problems, maybe too tight on ring gap? You can find better pistons but not to that price.

Go with the SPM´s if you already ordered but measure them, never seen a set in with the right measurements. SPM were the company first to sell cheap China Volvo parts and often to the same price as US/Swedish made parts.

That's how I did it. Their measurements are perfect, just not the one which got replaced.

It was purely my fault to neglect compression height as I assumed 83 pistons will be for S60R where in reality they are not. Beginner's fault on my part ;).

I will see how the rods are different compared to CX racing and post some info here. We will have to machine them, that's for sure, because they are 25.7 wide at the top where they should rather be 25.0.

But hey, custom, right? ;)

We had a customer bringing 5 SPM rods to a build a few years ago, measured them and 2 had oval holes in the big end. Called SPM and they sent us 2 new. Measured them and 1 were oval, called again and guess what they said? "-Oh, we´ll send two more, one of them have to be round."

Haha, that´s quality control, didn´t even bother to check! :)

With that said, they are wide and can handle a lot of power once the holes are round. They sold Venolia before their own pistons and they were solid, just needed upgraded rings.
