Tommy.
Hey guys, posting this up for my brother since he is super swamped at work today, So twice in the last 2 weeks when I got home from work and pulled in the garage I shut the car off and the fan kept running for about 5 minutes, did not think anything of it but it has never done that before, 10 hours later when I went to leave for work in the AM I turned the key to second position and the fan came back on…this also had never happened before. I turned the key to start the car and the engine turned over but would not start, it was trying to and sputtering but would not “catch”. I turned the car off and waited because the fan was still running even through the key was in my hand. I waited until the fan went off (5 minutes +) when it was finally off I tried the whole thing over again, fan came on in 2nd position but I started the car and it had a stronger try, but I gave it some gas and it caught and stayed on, it stayed at about 1100 RPMs for a minute or so until I put it into gear then it dropped down to the normal 800-900. It has only happened twice and was exactly a week apart, both times at night after driving home. Any suggestions or help would be appreciated. Kevin.
I swear I remember the cooling fan relay would cause this issue
Fudge_Brownie
If you turn the key to Ignition II with the car off, and engine cold, where's the temp needle at? Maybe the temp sensor (ECT) is misreading, hence the fan coming on and trouble starting. Make sure the CEL light isn't burned out too.
gswede
Agreed on the coolant temp sensor. And if it is completely shot, fan will run all the time as a failsafe due to ECU missing signal. Your MPG would be dropping too, as ECU chucks in more fuel to safeguard engine. Johnny5banger
I had this problem 2 weeks ago. Fan would run constantly and no start condition. Turned out to be a broken purple wire on the Main relay above the cooling fan.
Tommy.
Awesome thank you all for the responses. We looked at the ECT, definitely needs replacing. and I will check the purple wire on the main relay Johnny. Thanks so much!!
