aharres
Hello. I have a 1999 V70 T5 automagic with 135k miles and I have noticed for the past while that I have to put in about 2 quarts of oil every 5k miles. Recently, I have realized I have smoke coming out of my exhaust occasionally. I took a video of the smoke at idle. The paper towel picked up some really oily gunk. I replaced the entire pcv system about a year ago. Here you can see some hella vacuum on the dipstick. Some oil on a paper towel from swabbing the inside of the exhaust tip. The smoke. Some oil soaking the intercooler plastic and the hose. Some oil on the compressor housing. More oil. Keep in mind, I never cleaned my intercooler or hoses or anything when I replaced my pcv system. What do you guys think could be the issue? Is it the turbo seals? Is it valve stem seals? Is there any other sort of diagnostic I should do to determine the cause? gswede
2 quarts/5k is perfectly normal oil usage for these engines. My R is up to complete Stage 0 with no visible oil leaks anywhere - got them all fixed now :-) And I still use more oil than you and that with 10w-60 Castrol Edge. Valve guide stem seals is more often than not the culprite.

There is a lot of oil soaking the intercooler and turbo compressor housings which make me think turbo seals. But I have heard valve stem seals are pretty common and have similar symptoms. gswede
Are you using fully synthetic oil? I use roughly a quart every 13-1500 miles so yes, I wouldnt worry. The gunk in intercooler and pre turbo is also completely normal, it accumulates gunk there due to crank case ventilation discharge just in front of turbo. Unless you got oil pooring out of intercooler when removing lower intercooler hose I would not be worried. Even if it did poor out, I`d suspect a blocked intercooler weep hole before anything else. You might want to have a look at your throttle plate as I suspect some build up there to. intercooler and throttle plate can do with regular cleaning. aharres
I'm using mobil 1 5w30 full synthetic. I cleaned my throttle body when I did the pcv service. How would oil get on the outside of the turbo on the compressor housing?
gswede
From your picture there is no oil on the turbo housing. Some oil residues which have attracted other debris but no oil per se. Over time you accumulate some oil residues in the engine compartment, on ALL engines. Especially at the back of the engine. Like on our engines, with the PTC grommet not always being completely sealed ( arrangement on the bottom of accordian hose from air filter to turbo where the oil/water vapours from inside of engine is being sucked in pre turbo) this is higly common. gswede
BTW. Oil smoke from tailpipe is normally blueish in color. White smoke is steam, combustion generates water. This water is being blown out the rear end and if you combine that with a stock tune which is very rich on AFR at WOT, gunk accumulates. Even my brand new Focus ST has the dirtyest of tailpipes, all turbo cars do - if driven actively :-)

It looks greyish white with a hint of blue.
gswede
Again, not uncommom due to dried up valve stem seals. Unless it starts bellowing blue smoke I`d say you`re golden. Keep oil topped up and enjoy the car.
