aharres
Ok. I started my car today, and after about 3 seconds it shuts off. The transmission shift up light, the check engine light, and the battery light come on. I try to start it again and it just spins. If I lock the car and unlock it, then try to start it the whole cycle repeats again. I thought it must be the immobilizer. So I started at the antenna ring. I took it off and verified that there is a closed circuit on the two pins which lead to the coil. I sprayed some contact cleaner in the connector and connected it a few times. I tried to start the car again and the same stuff happens as before. Does anyone have any input on this? Is it likely that it is still the antenna ring? How common it is to have the immobilizer module completely and suddenly fail?
Midnight Caller
Check all your fuses, I had an issue where a fuse sat tilted in the socket and didn't let me start the car. Just a wild guess...
aharres
I have gotten it to run for almost 10 seconds before it dies. I'm going to get a new antenna tomorrow. Hopefully this is the solution. I also noticed the ets light comes on when this happens, but I dont think it means it is ets related. When it was running it was idling as smooth as it normally is and holding a steady rpm.
aharres
I installed the new antenna and no luck. It ran for about 10 seconds before suddenly shutting off.
aharres
Ok guys don't make fun of me, but I think it's the fuel pump relay. I jumped the two pins and the car seems to be running. I'm going to pick up a fuel pump relay monday and ill report back on the results.
floggingmike
Just a word of advice in troubleshooting, start small and work your way up. Hope you found the issue.
Midnight Caller
As far as I know the pump relay is actuated by the ECU after the IMMO OK, so I don't think it will solve your issue
aharres
And she runs! It was the fuel pump relay. I wonder if this is the reason my car would sometimes take 2 or 3 seconds to start. I opened up the relay and the mechanical part still moves freely. None of the capacitors are busted and nothing looks burned up. The only thing I noticed is this resistor that just barely has a piece of solder attached to it. It looks like the resistor moved out of position when the board was getting soldered. I assume a machine did it because it's surface mount. I wonder how many boards this happened to?

Piston Slapper
I've seen a master tech chase an imaginary immobilizer issue for two days because there was a stored immo code when the car came in, and it turned out to be the fuel pump relay, don't feel too bad.
