Streetable Track Pad Options

I'm looking into adding a bit more bite to my brakes with some upgraded pads, been looking at Hawk HPS as well as a few others recommended by my E36 track friends. That being said, I'm looking for suggestions from those that have upgraded to a more track oriented pad for street use. I will be upgrading to 302's soon, but not immediately so I'm looking for something that will give a bit more bite, I don't care about noise, but high dust is a definite problem.

Who has what pads and what kind of driving have they performed well in? I will be hitting Tail of the Dragon again this year harder than I have the last few years so I need something that can keep up!

Are you ever going to be on a real track, or driving hard on the street? Those are two very distinct sets of needs and most people mistakenly think a track pad is good for a street car.

I'm running Porterfield R4-S and they're a great street/autocross pad but I wouldn't even think about taking them on a real track.

For the street, these pads have been kickass. Not much dust, very low/no noise, and the harder I drive the harder they stop. According to Porterfield, the R4-S hit peak friction at ~300*F and hold it up to ~900*F but degrade rapidly after that. The other pad I was considering was the Ferodo DS2500, which has a slightly higher effective temp range and not much trade off in terms of dust/noise.

A true track pad will be fine at temps well over 1200*F but won't warm up until 500+ degrees. Those won't be any use on the street. They'll be loud, dusty, and useless in 90% of situations.

Additionally, 302s and stock single piston calipers won't do much to dissipate a lot of heat - I've experienced very bad fade with 302s while autocrossing on a small (peak speeds of ~45 mph) course with runs lasting about 45 seconds and about 5 minutes to cool off between runs. They're fine on the street, but I wouldn't dream of tracking the car with 302s.

302s are barely adequate for my stock wagon, let alone a modified car that can carry far more speed in a straight line than I do.

SS braided lines will help a lot with bite "feel" as they don't expand under hydraulic pressure, but no pad is going to make a huge difference with your stock brakes. You kinda have a choice, ceramic won't create as much dust on your luscious wheels but will fade quicker. Semi-metallic will not fade as quick but produce a lot more dust.

Jut nut up and get some Brembos all around.

I also recommend the Porterfield R4-S for street use, and some autocross. But, I switch to the R-4 compound version for autocross/Track use. The R-4 compound pads do squeal... like, a lot... like, people walking on the sidewalk staring at you, a lot... So, if you use them for autocross, make sure you swap them out afterwards. As said before, the R4-S are high temp, grip like mad, and very low dust pads.

I have the R4 componds on my Wilwoods. And yes, they are loud, squeaky, horrible things for the street. Magically once they get hot the noise almost goes away. If this car was my daily driver there is no way I would keep them in for day to day use. They also lack bite when they are cold, and you got to remember to give a little more distance when slowing down if you've been cruising around and off the brakes.

The R4-S seems to be the way to go, and I've used them on a few cars. Hawk makes a good street "fast road" pad as well. All the other race pads I've used are completely unusable/unsafe for the street.

R4-S seems like a front runner, I was also looking at the Hawk HPS as well but given the recommendations I've seen above the Porterfield sounds like it has been used by quite a few people.

Most driving will be spirited on road with potential for some Auto-X once it warms up and I make a few repairs to my car to deem it worthy. Maybe 1 HPDE toward the end of the year (if I have time). I've got stainless lines which will be going in as well, then plan is to upgrade to 302's in the near future (next 2-3 months).

I have been using EBC yellow pads with great success.

They classify these pads as track and street pads and despite i have never tracked my car i believe they really are.

The cold bite is very good and when warmed the pads will bite much harder.

And when breaked in they produce no noise. About dust I can't say a lot because my rims are anthracite.

It worths a try IMO.
