So you're saying larger brakes have no effect on stopping distance?

For a single sudden stop, the only affect is additional mass, they offer no benefit in that situation. This has been tested before, in stopping distances before and after BBK installs. The difference is the BBKs don't fade as fast and can do multiple back to back hard stops, which is why they're good for racecars.

"Locking up" exponentially lengthens your stopping distance.

No shit, I wasn't stating that's the proper way to brake, but if you have enough braking force to lock up then the limiting factor is not your brakes.

I know. I'm trying to figure out his reasoning as to why 302s won't decrease stopping distance. Disregarding shitty tires.

In fact, Dan Barnes of StopTech surprised the heck out of us when he said, "If you have a properly-functioning, well-designed brake system already, the only thing you can do to improve single-stop braking distance is get better tires. Any force that accelerates, slows or stops the car can only be applied through the tire's contact patches. If your current brake system is using all four tires to stop the car as effectively as possible, no brake system change will result in a shorter stopping distance."

If the StopTech guys, who make a living selling BBKs, say BBKs won't decrease stopping distance... I'll not only take their word for it, I'll applaud their honestly prevailing over their desire to move product.

The larger brakes do help me since almost all of my driving is sprinted mountain roads. I noticed a difference with the 302s when I switched to them.

With that said, I noticed an even more significant difference when I changed out my old brake fluid.

Oh they're a good upgrade, no doubt about it, I just think everyone should understand what that upgrade will do and won't do.

For repeated stops, bigger rotor is better because they resist fade better, ie bigger rotor have more mass and it takes longer to heat up. For 1 sudden panic stop, bigger rotors will make almost no difference, ABS will help more.

I wanted the 302MM rotors for my front because the rear rotor bigger than the front ones is not a good look.

  • 3 weeks later...

I have been running 302's for 6 years on my T-5R. Got a screaming deal from Waltrip-- 2 Zimmerman cross-drilled rotors and two brackets for $200, shipped. I put EBC Red Stuff pads on, but only got 15K miles out of this combo before the steering wheel vibration got too strong. I had the rotors turned and the vibrations initially went away. Two years ago, after 30K miles, the steering wheel vibrations returned. I had ATE Premium One rotors and another set of EBC Red's installed. I am 13K miles into this set and the steering wheel vibration is horrible, especially stopping from 60mph+.

If you are running 302's and have been happy with the performance and mileage, what combo of rotors/pads are you using?

I'm running 302's on my 98 v70 t5. I've tried brembo rotors  and zimmerman rotors with metal master pads and would get steering wheel vibration with brake application after a few thousand miles

of driving.  I switched to the stock volvo 302 rotors and stock volvo pads 3 years ago, and do not have the steering wheel vibration any more even after extreme hard braking. The only complaint I

have with volvo pads is the amount of brake dust.

I been running the 302 with bracket 8602456 since like 03 or so. I need to put back on my crossed drilled rotors on the car, I used to use cabon brake pads from kvr performance out of Canada they wasn't that dusty. My brake lines are rusted what can I do to take the lines off?
