Hi.. I have a 2006 s40 T5 6sp man front wheel drive.  I believe it has a failed axle bearing (the one connected to the engine block).  Can this bearing be replaced?? Or does the entire shaft assembly need to be changed?  I can't find and replacement axles for the 6sp man....all are listed foe Auto only.   OEM Volvo is available for $600!!..

Any input is appreciated

In my experience, I have never seen the center support bearing on the axle shaft go bad. It's always the wheel bearing. Wheel bearing/hub assemblies are very common on P1's at my shop. Just did one on Friday. If you installed a brand new axle assembly and check the center support bearing with a stethoscope, it will make just as much noise as the old one. Usually it's just noise that's transferring through from other components to that bearing due to the design. I would check the wheel bearing with a stethoscope or a long screwdriver with it up in the air if you can do that. If it's bad enough, you won't need to use a stethoscope, you will just hear a howling noise when you put your ear up to the wheel. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info..  I have done all 4 wheel bearings (front twice) in past 4 months.  I pulled rt side axle today and bearing feels good, pulled seal and added grease anyhow.  Also have 4 new tires and alignment.  My problem is a resonant vibration (more of a noise) at about 50-55mph.  I would have sworn it was a wheel bearing, but I feel I have ruled that out.   I lost about 1/2 a cup of man trans oil when I pulled the axle, do you think that is ok? The fill on the 06 s40 with the M66 is a oh yeah! to get to, so I haven't refilled it yet.

How good are your tires? If it's not a droning noised you're hearing, another common culprit is the tires get choppy and make a similar noise. I know you said they are 4 new tires, but I have had an issue where I had a noise similar to a wheel bearing because we used cheap tires. When we swapped out with Michelin's from a car we had on the lot, noise was gone.

As far as the trans fluid you lost, these only take about 2 quarts for a drain and refill. While 1/2 a cup isn't bad, probably should top it off in the off chance that it wasn't full to begin with. What I do to get to the fill plug is unbolt the lower torque mount, and then I can pry the engine out of the way of the subframe to get a socket or wrench on the bolt and be able to fill it up.
