Odd Cooling Issues

Recommended Posts

So, I've got two, probably related, things going on. The AWD's cooling fan doesn't run at all after the car is shut off, regardless of temp, works fine when the car is running. And after being parked while hot, like when I get to work, it'll sometimes blow coolant out from the expansion tank cap pressure valve. While running it maintains proper temp and can idle indefinitely after a hot run without anything coming out of the tank.

This just came up and I'm just looking for where to start and if anyone's had similar issues.

Might swap or at least examine your cap and expansion tank, both can crack and no longer hold pressure causing a boil over.

Age of thermostat?  I like to swap them every 3-4 years, after that point they seem to become unreliable.

On several occasions over the years (and different Volvo cars), on hot shut-off I have heard a gurgling / boiling.  Tells me there is a pressure leak somewhere and is a preface to a coming "issue".  My problem spots have been cracked side-tanks on the radiator, splitting or worn-thin and leaking coolant or heater hoses, and once the coolant tank nipple was cracked at the reservoir.  All can be cold pressure tested which is a preferred way of investigating.

Glad to hear your problems appear to be behind you....
