mattsk8
As many of you know, I did a manual swap in my 99 V70r about 2 years ago. I would've posted in that thread but the search feature here doesn't seem to work, and I think that thread has been archived so I can't post in it anyhow. The transmission I used was a M66 out of a 2005 S40.This morning, I started the Volvo and backed out of my driveway. Put it in 1st gear and started heading up my road and it just went "clunk", and the car was in neutral. I can still easily shift through the gears. I would say something may have happened to the slave cylinder, but generally if that goes the clutch gets stuck engaged, rather than disengaged. With the engine running and without pressing the clutch, I can shift through all the gears (including reverse) and it does nothing; no grinding or anything. There were no issues at all leading up to this, it always worked great.Any ideas? Transmission failure?
KlausC
Verify that one of the axles did not pop out of the tranny.
Ol' Dirty Noodle
Verify that one of the axles did not pop out of the tranny. If both axles are there it could be the gear selector which a few people have had issue with
mattsk8
I'll post back after I get home tonight and look it over. IMO, I think it's internal in the transmission. If it were a linkage issue, I think I would've had some sloppy feeling somewhere while shifting, but it shifts through the gears normally. It could be an axle issue, but I would guess there would've been some additional clunking or grinding if that were the case from the axle flopping around. Plus the fact that I can shift through the gears with the engine running and the clutch pedal out and not have it grind or do anything... makes me think something broke in the transmission. Either way... Volvos are dumb
98glt-5
I put an aftermarket axle in my car. Was good for about 2 weeks, shifted second hard, and pop, no gears. Did exactly everything yours did. Broke the end of the axle off in the differential. Was like a bad clutch, could move shifter into every gear with clutch engaged and disengaged and engine running. Definitely check the axles. Put it up in the air, and spin an axle in gear, it should spin the other backwards.

mattsk8
Pretty sure it's the driver's side axle, I'm going to take it apart later tonight. Any surprises you ran into when you took yours out? Only asking cuz that axle was a mofo to get out originally, I can only imagine it'll be worse now that I don't have the rest of the axle to pry on. mattsk8
Got the axle out and that was the problem, any ideas on how to get the broken part out of the transmission?

mattsk8
Drill a hole in the broken piece and thread in a screw and pull out with a slide hammer.Just spent $38 on a couple drill bits and some 1/2" threaded rod. I'm going to drill it, tap it, then thread the rod in through a big washer and tighten it until it hopefully pops out. Been busy, but tonight I'll get after it. mattsk8
The threaded rod worked well, broken piece is out. Going to get the new axle tomorrow and put it back together.

I've done this to the front driveshaft in my old Chevy 4x4 a couple times, but haven't seen a break like this on a CV axle before. Would've been tricky to find too, 98glt-5 was the reason I looked (thanks BTW). If he didn't post I'd have probably about had the engine cradle out before I realized the axle was the problem. It didn't make any noise at all except the one clunk it made when it broke.Raxles no longer supplies axles for Volvo, so I ordered a reman from Napa for $63. The 92 was supercharged. It was fucking fast. Had a quaife diff too.
