Can't get 1998 S70 T5 to pass emissions

On a side note, I can tell that back in the day - driving the old bricks 240`s and the like. We used to remove the airfilter from the factory box just (reststop before control station) prior to having the MOT/annual smog check. Often times the cars where howering close to acceptable limits, even at bone stock configuration, letting it breathe ever so slightly easier did the trick.

All of the other checks during her lifetime have been nonexistant emissions.  The emission tech pulled up her history and was shocked at how very little she emits even now with all the performance parts.  So some mechanical part has failed recently and I need to figure out the problem.  I did a smoke test and no vacuum leaks.  Installed a new MAF and the AFRs seem to be a touch better.  Only other thing to do is get a new CAT.

Lee, if you have to install a replacement cat then I would suggest the you consider having vbands welded to the cat so that you can swap out the cat with a straight pipe afterward, and easily  reinstall the cat when its emissions time again.

Well, here's the fuel filter I removed from Red.  Who also thinks this might be the original fuel filter.  A 121,000 mile old fuel filter.

Did a compression test last night and 4 cylinders read 165 and one cylinder read 170, so all good there.  Did a carb cleaner spray check around the intake gasket and fuel injectors and no stumble in the idle, so no gasket leaks.  My volvo mechanic used his Volvo scanner to monitor the car and found nothing unusual.  Except for the new rear O2 sensor readings.  Generally the rear O2 sensor is a lil lazier than the front, but the new sensor is reading awfully quick to changes.  Would a hi-flow CAT change how the rear O2 sensor reacts?

But anyway, car is going back tomorrow for emission testing to see how she is now with all the repairs.  Last straw is putting a new CAT on.

I think you're going to need a new cat and you should follow Darnell's suggestion if you do.

But I hope not - here's to passing emissions!

Meh, not going to start playing flippity flop with the CAT and a straight pipe just cause I might eek 2 more HP from a straight pipe in place of the CAT.  If I want a real horsepower car I merely have to drive the Super Bee.   HOWEVER, it would make it easier for future CAT swaps if need be again.

Oh, and I've got a new Magnaflow CAT coming just in case tomorrow is a fail.

you're saying my wagon isn't a race car cause I don't have a CAT? :(

Just kidding. Good luck today Lee! I'm I'm the city all day with my Dad while he is getting knee surgery, if it was on different terms I'd swing by and say Hi at your office!

Yep, just got new CAT installed, and the old hi-flow CAT had half its insides missing.  Guess I know the definitive reason why she's failing.

It was the stupid CAT!!!  Half the insides were burned away (damn race gas)(yes Darnell, you were right, I was wrong).  Car finally passed emissions with the new Magnaflow CAT, minimal emissions now!!!
